Left back for Norwich, eligible for Ireland and playing regularly for them and they potentially could be in the premiership next season.

We're short of LBs, he's not of Ian Harte quality but he's 25 and english born so probably ticks all the boxes for a call-up.

US Tour would be a perfect opportunity. The FAI should make contact.

He's the brother of 28-year-old Paul Tierney who started out with Manchester United and represented us at under-21 level. Paul is also a left-back but is now with Altrincham in the Football Conference.

Wasn't there a Fran Tierney declaring for us at one point.. Crewe I think!

On a side note Steven Reid should really be back in the Irish squad at this stage but you can be sure Trapattoni hasn't even bothered to contact him.

Tardelli is at the Norwich-WBA game now. Irish (and Irish-ish) players involved include Long, Hoolahan, Tierney and Reid.

He is. Cox is on the bench. I'm guessing he is there to see Hoolahan and maybe Tierney.

Good. Kyle Naughton a possibility also. Anyone know if Declan Rudd the goalie who just saved a penalty from Odemwingie has any Irish connections?

As suggested a big English prospect.

The name Declan suggests a recent connection but if he's being talked up as an England international I doubt his head would be turned anyway.

Tierney was impressive today, especially going forward. Haven't seen enough of him defensively but being at Norwich...I think we'll find out over the course of the season.

Rudd appeared in an England u21 squad (http://hammyend.com/index.php/2011/08/briggs-earns-england-u21-call) as recent as last month.

I think 6 foot is quite small these days, certainly compared to some forwards and centre halves.

He was playing in League One 12 months ago, so he has effectively stepped up two divisions, which is quite a jump.

Hopefully he makes the next jump.... to becoming our dominating force in the ...uh...whatever in say...uh 2020.

Irish eyes on Tierney. Canaries full-back on the Republic's radar

Also according to this mornings Sun newspaper (I know) Kyle Naughton is open to committing. Anyone buy it?

Starting again tonight v Sunderland along with Wes Hoolahan, Anthony Pilkington (& Kyle Naughton). John O'Shea starts for Sunderland and James McClean is on the bench.

Westwood also on the Sunderland bench.

Just saw Hoolahan lined up next to O'Shea in the tunnel, I knew he was short but I never realized just how short he is. Next to O'Shea and with the keepers behind them I genuinely thought he was a mascot. Tierney the only played to have started every match for Norwich.

Tierney looks a good player, without being a glaringly obvious improvement on what we have. Puts me in mind of a left-sided Stephen Carr.

Nah, it was a great dinked cross in from Tierney.

Tierney seems to be able to hold his own in the PL which is a good sign. The Sky article forgets to mention the ever present Stoke left back Marc Wilson. It would be a bit ridiculous if Tierney suddenly jumped ahead of Wilson who has much more top flight experience (yes I know Tierney is left footed).

OT: No Pilkington thread that I can find but I was wondering does anyone know his story. His Wikipedia page is quite amusing. It states that he didn't know he was eligible and that he played one game for the U21's in 2008. Holding out for an England call up?

I don't think it would really have been an issue for him up until now. He's been playing League 1, albeit with an excellent team in Huddersfield. I don't think he'll ever be England quality (whatever that is these days), he's 23 now, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind playing for us again, if he was asked. I imagine some journo will inquire soon enough now he has a few games under his belt in the EPL.

Yeah I agree that at 23 and at his level/profile that he wouldn't realistically be close to the England squad.

I was thinking more of "why did he only make one U'21 appearance?". As in did he fancy checking it out and then decided not to commit? Or did the management suddenly not fancy taking another look at him after one appearance?

Judging by the roasting Tierney got off Walcott today, he has a long way to go if he is to be the answer to our left back woes

In fairness to Tierney, he was left to deal with Walcott alone for most of the game. That wouldn't happen playing for us...

I'd agree that he was isolated and with Walcott's pace, he was always going to be up against it. However, there is no excuse for the way he just dived in on a couple of occasions, instead of holding his ground. Schoolboy stuff

An off day against top quality opposition. He certainly did himself no favours but it's the first time I've had much of an opportunity to see he gets the benefit of the doubt for now.
