I see that he is back on the bench for Motherwell today in the Cup semi-final after a shoulder injury. He has had 12 appearances for Motherwell since joining them on loan, does anyone know how he is doing?

Apologies in advance if there is already a thread started on Gunning but did a search and couldn't locate any.

Motherwell losing 1-0 at ht. Gunning crashed a tremendous shot off the Celtic crossbar. Unlucky.

Commentators were adamant that he couldn't have hit it any better. Would 4 inches lower not have been better?

They seemed to be shifting blame to the crossbar alright. ;) Shame, it would have been one of the goals of the year if it had gone in.

I think in fairness it took a slight deflection (which you could only notice from behind the goal) which lifted it up and might have made the difference.

I'm not convinced it took a deflection. Around the 2:50 mark

Brace for Gavin Gunning today against ex-club Motherwell. He has being linked with a free transfer move to Celtic or Rangers at the end of the season.

Well I for one can't foresee any problems arising from this.

A 23 yr old CB with 100+ senior apps and a mainstay of his first permanent club side who are in the shake up for a Europa League spot in Scotland, P.F.A. recognition and likely to step up in club profile after this contract too. Worth a peep in a big squad / training camp get together ?

Would you clamour for the same profile of player plying his trade in Ireland with a team in the shake up for a Europa League spot? ;) seriously though...?

He certainty took the goal well, got up well for it.
Loved the celebration too, seem like he is a big fan of Robbie Keane, but the celebration needs more work
before he reaches Robbie's standard,.

Looks like exciting times for him. He was a beast in Football Manager '07. Ended up captaining my Ireland side. Kind of gobsmacked he's still only 23.

Is Gavin the next unheralded-bubbling-under-the-surface player about to make the breakthrough?

Who was it that said here recently that he was relatively relaxed about the lack of headline young players, Geysir? Obviously it's always good to have confidence in the younger crop but equally there has always been someone like Finnan who just happened to be real quality without ever having shown it aged 20. I had high hopes for Foley being the next Finnan, though in an understated way I was very pleased with Keith Andrews, a late arriver who had put in the hard yards before getting the rewards.

There was an interesting interview with Gunning a few weeks ago (it might have been posted in here) where he was very dismissive of the standard of Championship football and the defenders being called up to the national squad when he was playing good passing football at Dundee United. He certainly seems to rate himself and it would be interesting to see him play on the continent.

He seems to be a character, someone with presence. We need lads like that at the back.

Look at how he squared up to Wanyama and that celebration.

We have a few good options at the back in Dunne, O'Shea, Delaney, Wilson, Clark and a number of lads that could make/on verge of a breakthrough in the next few years; Duffy, Hoban, O'Brien, Egan, Gunning.

There is a lot of bleak, even defeatist, talk about how we are not bringing players through but as disappointed as I am in the draw, we can stand up to Poland and Scotland.

We can even stand up to Germany if we don't bend over for them. Didi Hamann, in the Examiner, just echoed thoughts I have voiced previously about
how Germany have a rank defence, aging injury prone players and no replacement for Klose coming through. They are not guaranteed 6 points. Wrong attitude to have. Yes, they have Ozil, Reus, Kroos, Gotze and Schurrle (Jesus now that you mention it) but they all occupy the same positions. There has been plenty of evidence at club and International level (Arsenal) over the last few years of teams with luxuries like this just passing in circles and not being able to break solid teams down. And a couple of those lads are having sh*te seasons anyways.

People went on about how strong the last group we were in was. Let's not mince words. Sweden were absolutely woeful in both games. Austria were better but let's not pretend we didn't draw in Dublin because of anything other than tactical ineptitude and the footballing equivalent of a Wilhelm Scream that was the last few months of the Trapattoni era.

We have way more depth than the teams that traditionally struggle to qualify for Championships; Finland, Iceland, Hungary. We are easily as good as Poland and Scotland. The former who have three star players and a squad of Championship standard players and two of their star players are perennial crocks and one may even be doubtful for our games.

Let's not put ourselves down.

Why would he choose Serie A when he has the mighty Owls to play for? Wednesday have apparently fought off Rangers for his signature but, that said, nothing completed as yet.

Any further information on why he did that?

There was also interest from Eastern Europe with clubs from Poland and Romania looking at him, though the player decided heading for there was not for him.

https://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/fp/morton-move-sets-up-dundee-united-clashes-for-gunning/

Set to reject offers from Polish and Romanian clubs and instead sign for Scottish second division club, Greenock Morton.

Would he not be better off just returning to Ireland?

Although I know Scotland has a great pull for Irish people - for some reason.

Like living and socialising in Scotland hasn't done much for his career - or reputation - insofar.

Barry Douglas (a Scot) moved to Poland and won trophies. He's now playing in Turkey against the likes of Galatasary, Fenerbahce and Besiktas.

He's done more for himself in Poland than he ever did in Scotland.

This Irish footballer mentality again.

The average Irish 18 year old can move to Timbuktu looking for work, but the average Irish footballer can't see beyond their own nose.
