I was in Lilywhites, a big sports shop in Piccadilly Circus, yesterday buying an Irish jersey for my 5 year old beacuse last year his teachers gave out to me for not sending him to school in a Irish shirt on Paddy's Day.
The footy dept. has 100s of teams' shirts. There were two guys, very Eastern European, and all they wanted was an Irish shirt.
They were arguing over the home or away shirt, and like 2 girls they were holding the shirts up over their torsos and looking for an opinion from the other. I was trying to point out to one of them that the eircom logo on the home shirt was out of date but he literally hadn't a word of English.
My guess is that maybe they were McGeady fans. Too early for Macedonia.

Or maybe they just wanted something "officially green" for St. Patrick's Day?

I'm shocked they didn't call social services.

Was in a Singapore at the weekend and went to the "GOAL" shop. It had both Ireland home and away shirts and both are sponsorless. It's a proper shop btw not a knock-off place.
Saw a lot of people down in Australia with Ireland shirts, including that Orange one of the McAteer high kick in Macedonia vintage.

Not entirely relevant, but thought it was strange when I noticed it at the time. It's a collection of the World Press Photo winners 2010, but check out the Thai anti-government protester in photo eight wearing what I'm pretty certain is a Meath GAA polo shirt: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12428938

I was in Minami-Matsumoto train station in Matsumoto city about 5 years ago, and going out of the station I saw boy of about 12 wearing an Ireland away shirt. I told him I was Irish, and asked him why he was wearing the shirt and if he liked the Irish team. Sad to say, he looked warily at me for a few seconds, looked at his friend, and they both turned and walked away.

Saw a Korean lad wearing a fairly recent (Euro 2008 quals) Irish jersey a few months back. I asked my 6th grade kids today about football, and was interested to find out that they've heard of Darron Gibson but not John O'Shea!

I don't even bother asking people over here in Ireland shirts if they're Ireland fans anymore, the story is always the same. Its either "XXXXXX brought it back for me" or "Yeah" and then after a follow up question "oh, I don't know, I just like playing with them in FIFA." Often a combination of the two.

Strange is how Mike Walsh of Everton ever got his one cap for Ireland. He made Paul Butler's solitary performance look brilliant and at one point he pulled on the ball and nearly removed an opposition player's head. How he got called up remains one of life's great mysteries!

He must've been decent enough to be playing for Everton around that time though, no?
Even if he was brutal for Ireland on that one occasion.

Strange is how we had Mike Walsh and Mickey Walsh in the Irish squad at the same time.
Mike Walsh joined Everton in 1981 in exchange for Seamus McDonagh and £90k. 3 years later he was playing for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
Mickey Walsh played 21 times for Ireland and was responsible for the magnificent winner against Russia in 1984 and a fantastic knee-sliding celebration afterwards. He also won the English league's goal of the season in 1975 (see below).

Interesting Mickey Walsh-Trapattoni connection. Mickey came on as sub for Porto in the 1984 European Cup Winners' Cup Final against Trap's Juventus team. Juve won 2-1.

When "approaching" Martin O'Neill to replace Stan, didn't the FAI go through Mickey Walsh?

Mickey is a football agent and O'Neills' friend, so that's quite possible.
Mickey played in that infamous game against Belgium 1981. On his return to Portugal, he went on non stop about the cheating referee Nazare, the Porto players had to tell him to calm down in case Nazare ended up refereeing a Porto game.

I think it was a couple of years earlier when they were looking for Kerr's replacement and MoN was between jobs taking care of his wife during her illness. Mickey is good friends with Martin and did some scouting for Celtic during their run to Seville in 2003.

The most inappropriate spot I ever saw a GAA/Ireland top was a M*ath one at the NZ beauty spot of Milford Sound, the one minor blight on an otherwise flawless day!
The most surreal ever was turning round in Seoul and seeing three Japanese girls in-a-row wearing identical Galway tops which was just a little surprising.....

Talking about surreal, i was sitting beside that japenese Lady that people mentioned on here before at the France away game. She was in the Galway jersey that people mentioned too(although im pretty sure it wasn't tommy varden or the supermacs one but the more recent aer arann one!!), with her husband and child, and the kid decked out, real cute kid too. Anyway they had only come over for the game. I couldn't believe it. At the end I stayed in the stadium for near half an hour without being able to say anything, but she was just completely inconsolable. A very very strange experience*, but at the time I probably didn't think about it as much.
*I mean ive had some strange effects on women in the past but never this bad :D joking.

As requested by Stutts, Mickey Walsh's goal against the Russians in 1984. A great run and cross by Michael Robinson to set it up. Mickey's celebration was not quite as dramatic a knee-slide as I had remembered - when I described it yesterday it was like a 10 yard slide but here it looks like he just fell on his knees.

Perhaps you could explain making copies of the videos and then he could send those?
I think you would then find many people would be willing to pay you for your time to make copies for them(a certain amount) as well.
i realise this has nothing to do with me, but i like to facilitate.

You're right there Paul - 25 year old tapes are of great sentimental value. The original tapes are in a climate-controlled chamber in Dublin (my parents' attic) but I have already converted a couple of things to DVD and I should be able to get them in MP4 format over the weekend. I'll PM you worm and share the files and then maybe you could find somewhere to host them.

Wow, an attic full of 25 years of Irish footy on tape...sounds like my wet dream :p Seriously though, I do understand not wanting to risk anything with them. Just let me know what I can do in terms of the video. I'm not great with converting DVDs (specifically if they are in .VOB format) but I know its tough to keep the audio in sync. And thanks for sharing as well.

Yep, that would be the plan from my point of view. MU is the best in my opinion because they allow large files and also they very rarely delete files so they can be there for years. I used MediaFire with the ones in the thread in my signature because MU was acting up when I was doing those, but it should be fine now.

This is the video I lifted the Mickey Walsh goal from. The preview is about 45 minutes long and includes interviews with a number of familiar faces from that era. It also includes the Don Givens hat-trick against Russia, the 1965 playoff game against Spain and lots of George Hamilton.
Thanks worm
