Amsterdam is pretty expensive if you want to stay in or around the city. In my student days I stayed in a 1 star hotel called Hotel Abba, its in a good location but the accomodation is very 1 star. It looks like a run down old building from the outside. If you're not fussy and just looking for a bed then this place is ok.

If you are travelling witha few people , an apartment is worth the shot, you have the freedom of bringing a few birds back too, I got one for 3 people in the centre .

There's an Ibis near enough to the city centre - 5 mins walk from the Red Light District and near a tram station (Waterloosplein, I think). Nice clean hotel, cheap and cheerful.

If you really want cheap, I know a few places where you can actually get paid to stay. You have to not mind being "in the shop window" though, so to speak.
