Pre-match First Division leaders Bray were made to fight all the way by the league’s bottom side at Century Homes Park on Friday night, trailing for over half an hour before hitting the front through fit-again forward Stephen Fox two minutes from time.

Former St Patrick’s Athletic youngster Anthony Murphy, tipped to be one of the First Division’s stars this season, opened the scoring for the home side 11 minutes before the break.

The midfielder, who has struggled to exert his influence in an out-of-form side to date, fired a volley past visiting keeper Chris O’Connor after a Gavin Doyle corner kick.

They could have gone in 2-0 up at the break but for Wesley Charles’s timely goalline intervention, and that gave Bray the impetus to mount a convincing record in the second half.

Robbie McGuinness levelled matters in the 69th minute, and Fox, who has missed the first two months of the season through injury, hit the winner in the 88th minute, volleying past Alan Fitzpatrick to keep Wanderers level on points with UCD.

However, the Students’ 4-1 win over Kilkenny City elsewhere ensured that Bray drop to second place on goal difference, while Monaghan remain bottom of the table with just one win in 11 games.

Monaghan United: Fitzpatrick, Mahon, R. O’Connor (Kelly, 76), Brennan (Molyneaux, 86), Graham Doyle, Murphy, Fullam, Shiels, Gavin Doyle, Markey (O’Meara, 76), A. O’Connor.

Bray Wanderers: O’Connor, Gifford, Long (Grogan, 60), Lynch (James, 18), Charles, Gormley (Fox, 27), McGuinness, Tresson, Ryan, O’Brien, Zayed.
