Lenihan Minor just after tweeting that he wants Biffo shafted again.
Lot of little piggys running around the Dail with little knives, this has legs yet.
Conor Lenihan calls on Cowen to go: http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0120/cowenb.html
Rumours of a backbench revolt to shaft Cowen this evening. Probably a few looking for promotions that didn't come off.
Ha. This is great stuff.
The Greens will be having their say soon.

So a politician who thinks Twitter is an appropriate medium for conducting the affairs of state says that someone else's credibility is gone?!
Greens on now: http://www.rte.ie/news/player_live.html#schedule
They welcome election date and decision not to appoint new ministers.
John Gormley says Cowen told him on Sunday that there could be new ministers. The Greens were strongly against.
They had no idea that resignations other than Martin would take place. They felt the cabinet should have discussed it once these happened. Not clear whether Biffo was going to go for new ministers but seems like he was.
The Greens told BIFFO they would not support new ministers in a Dail vote.
The government went very close to complete collapse by the sound of it.
Putting the boot in on FF a bit now.
Saying now that their only priority is the finance bill, not climate change or anything else.
Cowen has know for some time about the resignations but Gormley was told nothing- shocking way to run a coalition. Harney also kept it from the Greens.
Greens coming out of this relatively well I think... but this is going to run for quite a while longer.

You've set up the pun there, but the joke's too easy. Leave it for Neil Delamere or someone else on The Panel.

Vinnie is slaughtering Boyle! It's delicious... and he hasn't even gotten to Kebab Lenihan yet!
Got to love Willie O'Dea. You know if he still had a ministry he'd be out there fighting Cowen's corner, but since he lost it he's putting the boot in. And the same goes for that Kitt guy from Galway that used to be whip- their complaints just sound like sour grapes. Numpties.

Well 5 days after this thread was opened it looks like the OP was correct after all. Cowan to resign as FF leader in 15 mins. Press conference called.

Yep. God will this Government ever end. Resigning as FF leader, not Taoiseach.

Dodge, I'll accept a beer instead of humble pie please :-)
Legally the man can't resign as Taoiseach until the President kicks him out, or some such.
I think, for the sake of his own health, this is the best thing that could happen to him. He's a heart attack waiting to happen and the gombeen men in FF love having him as the Irish Yeltsin. Here's hoping he gets out of politics altogether.
edit: Conor Lenihan will offer his hand as candidate if there is nobody else "fulsome" running. Lovely :-) So now it's the brothers Lenihan and slimy Martin - of the 3 I'd pick Conor. At least he works, has a brain and follows sports.

Don't forget Eamonn O'Cuiv. Not that he'll win, but he will run.
Edit: Mary Hanafin has thrown her hat into the ring now also.

I, for one, welcome the candidacy of Eamon O'Cuiv - only a leader more tribal, parochial and incompetent than Cowen can complete the task of consigning FF to the dustbin of history, and so I sincerely hope Dev Óg is successful on Wednesday.

I have to admit I'm loving it. I feel it's entirely in keeping with the overall character of Fianna Fail that they can't see or even look beyond the end of their own selfish snout. Replacing Cowen before an election effectively hobbles their next leader rather than letting biffo tip his toes and let the next Gom at least have a clean slate after the election ...and for what? -to save two, three maybe four seats from the bounce this new leader might give them. Whoever "wins" will be getting told 'you got your answer from the electorate in Spring 2011' for years to come. I do so hope it's Hanafin. I do, I do, I do. She mightn't even retain her seat.

So, the younger generation of FF TDs bottled it and failed to put forward a challenger for the leadership.
That’s a pity: I was looking forward to a sort of Soldiers of Destiny’s Child leader (well, the Ff***ers have already made off with the rest of the booty...)
Now, to misquote the SAS motto: Who Cares Who Wins?

I don't accept that. I don't accept that for a second.
Surprised Lenihan's votes broke so much towards Martin. Thought they'd be the biffo block and stay country and western. I'd expect Lenihan to suddenly get some medical advice in the coming days...

Watching events in Cairo on telly. It seems there actually is a world leader out there even more unpopular than Brain Cowan. Step forward Hosni Mubarak.
Oh, actually, Hosni Mubarak can't be with us tonight. He's far too busy trying to avoid the Ceauşescu treatment.

Cowen has gone overboard now. His last day is tomorrow. The question is: Who will be Taoiseach until February 26? Do we even have one?

Cowen will remain Taoiseach until the next Dáil convenes and votes for a new one.
Cabinet will remain in situ also.

At this stage, we have a Taoiseach and cabinet by technicalities only. Neither have any power.
The electorate of Laois/Offaly never got to elect him as PM, and were denied the chance to cast their judgement on his time as it. They did however, get to pay for his perks and pensions in the future.
There are now 60-odd FFers sitting in the Dail who are putting themselves on the chopping block in 3 weeks time.

No electorate in any constituency elects the Taoiseach. The Dáil and only the Dáil elects the Taoiseach. Usually, though not in all cases the leader of the largest party after an election is elected Taoiseach.
The people of Laois-Offaly would have elected him again so thinking that they would pass judgement on him is beyond naive.
His brother, Barry is running now, what are the bets the discerning folk of L-O won't elect him?

Living in the constituency, and having made a lot of friends with the locals in Tullamore, Clara and Ferbane through Pitch and Putt, it is embarrasing listening to locals and the love they shower onto him.
Yet again when given the opportunity random punters interviewed on street for RTE1 radio they blamed his resignation on the Dublin people.
Some parts of the country don't deserve a vote.

The Ceann Comhairle just introduced Cowen as "An Taoisech Bertie Aherne". Only hilarious
