New England completes long-awaited transaction to add defensive depth.

After weeks of holdups and speculation, the Revolution today announced the signing of Trinidadian defender Avery John to a contract for the remainder of the 2004 season. Reportedly, New England also holds an option on the 2005 season, although terms of the deal were not released.

John is a decorated member of his country's National Team, having been capped 49 times for the Caribbean nation. John also has a long history of playing in the United States - he went to college at American University, and played in the A-League for the Boston Bulldogs and the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers. While with the Bulldogs, John was coached by current Revolution boss Steve Nicol.

The move should allow Head Coach Steve Nicol to reshuffle his lineup to some degree. Brian Kamler will likely move back to midfield starting on Saturday against the MetroStars, and that will in turn allow Joe Franchino to return to his left back position. John can play either in central defense or on the left.

John has also appeared for Shelbourne FC of the Irish Eircom League where he was a teammate of Revolution midfielder Richie Baker.

John will count as a Senior International player, meaning the club now has reached their foreign limit with Jose Cancela and Daouda Kante already on their roster.
