V.anal.....a flag's a flag.......The Four Provinces one is much better than the Tricolour despite its historical significance........even if people burn it...a mark of insecurity of fascist unionists who are worried they could be left behind by a 'Celtic Tiger'.....& be forced to'bow to the Papa'......FFS!

C'mon, Dev, no need to get your tri-colour-adorned panties in a twist.

The prevalence of your 'national flag' in Belfast doesn't bother one in the slightest, if that's what others aspire to and as is their wont. Even if it were to fly officially over Belfast city, my allegiance will remain wedded to the Union Flag.

Not "insecure" in the slightest.

What, that symbol of archaic Tan colonialism!

It wuz thoz big bad Brits, so it was :D

"Tan colonialism" ... [Lux checks his calender to assure himself that it's 2004 and not 1919. Reassured that it is so, he nips off out to collect for the traditional July 11th bonefires, whistling 'Jerusalem' ;) ].

davros calm down, its simple discussion and my orignal point boils down to time, no matter where your from, national pride is normal and no onw should be put down for it, no matter where they are from.....

Indeed, max. Puffed out with pride for my Irish roots ... it's just that dinosaurs like Dev cannot comprehend that my Britishness and Irishness are not mutually exclsuive.

Some might say that you're having an identity crisis (It's just I've been accused of that old chestnut before. ;) ).

BTW, your handle. Just wondering, I get the feel of a hotel behind it. Las Vegas? Always intrigued by these things. Especially if there's a sleasy story behind it.

This is a b*stardised concept of a b*stardised state.....to allegedly 'justify' themselves  ........How can you have 'national' pride in a archaic colonial state which is a'country',only when it suits itself.... :( !

You read too much into things, Dev, don't you?

I guess your view of that "archaic colonial state" differs to mine and therein lies the crux of my "justification".

Happily Irish, under the Union Flag. :)

Why not.....plenty of loyalist bigots do?! :(
Or have you not heard of /witnessed the Triumphalist approach?!

I have...was a member of that 'community'......doubtless like you.....have witnessed such events;Like a no.of local inhabitants,is Big but not clever......

Is there a point here?

Lopez - I would guess your knowledge of the New York underground scene of the late 1970s is fairly limited :D

Yeah,right....... :D neither fish nor fowl.....

Obviously like DG;You want to have your cake to eat over-double.......

Indeed, I could even leave behind Erin's green and pleasant land (do ya see what I did there? ;) ) and get myself a job on a building site in N4 (oh, go on, it's Neasden) :p

But I don't need to do that to enjoy my perfectly legitimate dual aspirations.

Rule Hibernia!

Erin Go bragh! But don't supposed yer interested......

I might be, if I knew what was the gist of the post.

My study of foreign languages was limited to Latin, French and German. So I do have experience of at least one dead language :D

Lopez - I would guess your knowledge of the New York underground scene of the late 1970s is fairly limited.Yeah but my knowledge of the London Underground scene since the early eighties is pretty extensive, and the place is falling apart at the seams.

Happily Irish, under the Union Flag.I know how you feel mate. :D

...I don't need to do that to enjoy my perfectly legitimate dual aspirationsNot when there's a spineless government and big army to ensure democracy doesn't prevail.

My study of foreign languages was limited to Latin, French and German. So I do have experience of at least one dead language :DSorry, but are you talking about Irish here? Wishful thinking no doubt, but the language is still alive. I've seen it spoken as an only language, let alone a first language, second language or something you were force fed at school. Perhaps you need to see a bit more of your country...or is it your country's neighbour? And I've yet to visit either Connemara or a chucky shebeen on the Falls Road. I'd even bet there will be an all-Ireland republic before the Irish language dies as a first language for everyone in Ireland...and I only bet on dead certs. :p

That's a shame, i know a lot of pub's in Belfast and other part's of the north east do pick up TG4 because they used to show the highlight's of SPL game's on monday night's and pub's on the Shankhill used to be packed apparently, i think you can get radio na geal on the ntl package, so if yer can yer should give it a listen, it'll prove that yer native laungage is far from dead.

Apparently, with the expansion of the EU, my 'native language' will be more global, the net result being that learning a foreign language at GCSE will be no longer compulsory.

'C'est la vie' ;)

To be fair, sylvo, any package that shows the highlights of SPL sounds like one to avoid :)

Lux-do you know a Baptist minister who goes to Glentoran games? I met him at a music festival over the summer and we started aguing because I was wearing a Celtic shirt and ma bro was wearing an Ireland shirt. After about 5 minutes it calmed down and he was a really sound bloke :)
