I'm in two minds. A day off with pay would be great but having an Orangemans' day type bigotfest means I'll be voting no. BTW, shouldn't St George's day be about the desert, bedouin tents, yashmacks and arabic dress followed by a some sheep eyes, taboulah and hummus and a cultural address from Colonel Gaddafi? :D

I'd vote yes as it means a day off for residents of England regarless of nationality.

For those who wish to celebrate they can take their flag down the pub and have a few pints of Carling. Everybody else can put their feet up at home? Whats the problem?

Not sure I understand you there lopez. Not too up on my international saints, care to explain?Apparently San Jorge was a Libyan. Hence my cryptic description about how St George's day should be celebrated. Also he's quite a popular saint. Catalan patron saint hence the St George's cross on the arms of Catalunya, Barcelona and FC Bastadolona. Also the SGC is the flag of Lombardia (region around Milan) and probably it's patron saint too. That is the reason for the SGF on the club crest as the notion of it being English is quite recent. Still think that the London Paddy's day march will be better attended than the SG day march unless the day off is given.

Was St George not either a) mythical or b) Turkish? Whichever he's the patron saint of literally dozens of countries, lots of which are Arab or Moorish. Nice irony considering how jingoistic and anti-arab some of our English friends are.

the irish inferiority complex towards england is funny to behold!Ahh we just can't win. We're either trying to bomb the b*stards, lick their a*ses or like me, in denial that we're really just one of them.

Nice irony considering how jingoistic and anti-arab some of our English friends are. I think we can safely say the aryan with his mother-in-law is mythical but the Turkish/Egyptian/Libyan is probably true. And yes the irony re the boneheads is wonderful. :D

Day off i've alway's said the tan's should have one for their patron saint, maybe some of them could spend the day finding out in something other then the sun where he came from, sure they'd be in for a shock. I'm all for a day off work.

Think I heard before AC Milan was founded by an Englishman, (actually had a cricket team for a while too) and that's the reason for the SGC on the club badge.

What about the puppets & St.Andrews Day........?!

No thanks, Dev ... I already celebrate St Pat's Day on March 17th, although I usually avoid the sectarian, coat-trailing, erm, "inclusive" parade in Belfast city centre.

As I said, you want to have your cake & eat it.....don't tell DG!

No cake, just a few light ales, with like-minded mates in a well-appointed hostelry. And we raise a toast to Pat the Brit, so we do .....

Ah yes a large melting pot of cultures .... where else would you get it, eh?

It's a bit homogenous over here on Erin's misty shores .... outside it's sunny, the birds are singing and the little Union Flag continues to proudly flutter on the Cenotaph. :)

St Patrick, for the majority of us. For the rest - it doesn't matter, as it's an excuse for a session. For the tiny minority that are yesterday's men, St George, probably :)

If this is true why don't the English flock over to Italy to see Milan play? Why don't ex pat Brits in Italy follow them?

I mean the Irish flock to Glasgow to see an club formed by an Irishman but the English don't do the same for an 'english' club in Italy.

Fair play to them for turning gloryhunting down. :p

I think the 'Irish' - North & South - flock to any old enormo-dome on the mainland to the detriment of the local game.

Milan and Genoa (two English-founded clubs, hence the usage of their English, rather than 'native', names) are hardly a short Easyjetter away now.

Haven't been in Dublin for a while so? It's a veritable melting pot and all the better for it. In fairness Belfast is dull as fook compared to our cosmopolitan capital city. ;)

Milan and Genoa (two English-founded clubs, hence the usage of their English, rather than 'native', names) are hardly a short Easyjetter away now.Ryanair during their 1p sales to Bergamo? No excuses for the English not to see their sides (BTW, Athletic Bilbao is another side but when I was there the place was full of Irish tricolours - and no they didn't have Celtic across them, Dev, oops, Dav :o ).

Anyway, the St George's cross as a sign of Englishness is a smokescreen. When the club was founded, Englishness was portrayed in a flag with the Butchers' apron. The St. George's flag is a recent addition: as a tan mate of mine told me recently: 'The [apron] is redundant. I'd only use it to wipe my ar*e with the blue bit.' And people accuse ME of being anti-British! I think you'll see the St George's cross on the shields on the old pre-war Italian flag: something about their own highest paid dole drawer - who had his benefits stopped just after the war - coat of arms.
