View Full Version : Indoor 'Legends' tournament Saturday December 18th
A LOI legends tournament is being held in the NBA in Tallaght on Saturday December 18th apparently.
Pats team supposedly includes O'Dowd, Nutsy, Gormley, Johnny Mac and Trapper.
Anyone else hear anything? Presume its open to the public?

I'd assume it is, as a minibus of Derry fans are coming down to it.

Nutsy has played for four of those teams, how was it decided which one to play for. Most of the other players have played for one or more of the other teams also. No doubt the bit o red will be on moaning that they havent been invited!

That fixture list appears to be a bit wrong.
I think all the fixtures from the 2nd section on are 30 mins earlier or maybe they need the 30 min gap before Bohs v Rovers for crowd control!

Apparwntly this was in the ROI/orway programme
Have you ever wondered what has become of the great players who graced the league of Ireland during the 80's and 90's ?. Every league of Ireland club has players who are remembered fondly by supporters but, unfortunately, after their playing careers finished many of these players drifted away from league of Ireland football or indeed out of football altogether. It has been disappointing to see a disconnect evolve between this large group of great players and the clubs they served so well for many glorious seasons.
Some have gone on to become highly respected coaches, such as Pat Fenlon and Paul doolin, but what of the talent which played alongside them, thrilling thousands of fans around the country every weekend?
Well, fans now have the chance to see what has become of the former glory boys and re-live great rivalries of the past! Many of the legendary players are set to pull on the club shirt again and enjoy playing with teammates with whom they shared past successes. This will happen during a one-day indoor blitz 5-aside tournament in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Saturday, December 18.
The competition is for players over 40 years of age and will feature the past stars of eight prominent league of Ireland clubs.Players from the legendary Shamrock Rovers four in a row side will again lock horns with teams such as the great Derry side led by talisman Liam Coyle.League title and cup-winning teams from Shelbourne,St pats,Galway,Dundalk and Cork will again pit their wits against each other to see who has survived the test of time. Many of the great Bohemians side who defeated Glasgow Rangers will again assemble to remember past successes and meet up with many friendly rivals of the past.
Key players from past squads have been contacted and asked to contact fellow ex professional players who featured alongside them during the club's past glory years.Squads of 12 players from each club will gather to shake off the cobwebs and get the ball rolling again.it promises to be a fantastic pre-Christmas event where former legends can re-live past glories and stories, and can enjoy the company of players they once played with and against.
There is no cover charge to come and see the event and it's also a great opportunity for fans to meet and greet true legends of their clubs.

Not indoor, seem to play 11 a side charity games now and then, against fans and other legends teams,

They played in a tournament with Linfield, Glentoran and I think Crusaders a few months back. They have also had a good few one off games- I think they are one of the only sides to defeat the "Liverpool Legends".

Five games is very few for that. Should be looking at maybe putting all the teams together into one group and having four rounds of matches. That'd fix whatever this thread is about.
(But he has a point. Two from this section to go through (and add UCD and Bray in), one from a south section (Cork, Cobh, Waterford, Limerick) and one from a far-away section (Monaghan, Derry, Galway, Sligo, Harps) and then a four-team super final, like in the Sky Masters. Would be fun is all.

8 teams in this. 4 from outside Dublin.
All the big clubs represented, and Shels.
No point in overkill

No reason not to expand it if it works well though. I'd like to see UCD in it, for example. I'm sure others'd feel the same.
(Are Cork not a big club? Or were Cork City big but Cork FORAS aren't? :p )

Of course you would. Doesn't mean you deserve a spot ;)
And no questiona t all that the biggest 7 clubs in the country are (in no order) Pats, Rovers, Shels, Bohs, Cork, Derry, Dundalk
The rest of you can find for that 8th spot

Cork aren't in it though. (Though JC said they were in and then the fixtures have Sligo in instead; maybe Cork withdrew).
Anyway, who the biggest teams are doesn't mean the competition shouldn't be expanded if it works well. That's the "big-club" mentality that's brought the league to its knees. You setting out to do the same here already?! :p
No point in overkill

Shels defeat Pats in the final by 4-0, having already beaten Shams 5-3 and Dundalk 5-0.
We could get used to winning some silverware again :D
In typical pats fashion, we were the best team throughout the tournament, ncluding beating Shels 3-1 in the group games, before failing in the final :)
Good day though, Pats squad was slightly changed from above with john treacy playing in goals (for the first time in his live apparently) and Mark Ennis drafted in. Ennis and Osam couldn't pkay the final due to being knacked up
