If a player is sent off in the League Cup does his suspension only apply in that competition, or is he suspended for the next league game?
If it is the former, do the suspensions carry over to the next season, and if so, who keeps track of it - say if a player moves to another jurisdiction for a couple of seasons?

Apparently both Deery and Holt (sent off against ye's on Tuesday night there) are eligible to play in the League tonight. I think LC suspensions stay in the LC.

And I think Drogs have just been docked 3 points when they played a player who was suspended playing for another club last year

Yep

The eircom League has today (May 13th) announced that Drogheda United have been deducted three (3) League Cup points as a result of their playing a suspended player, namely Glen Lacey, in Monday night's (May 10th) eircom League Cup Group 8 fixture v Dundalk. Glen Lacey will serve the outstanding suspension in Monday night's (May 17th) fixture v Bohemians.
pure speculation here but it may be understandable that drogheda presumed he wasnt suspended for the league cup but would be instead for the next league game - ie the bohs match.
grey area here maybe?
