Mick Doyle RIP

The former Irish rugby player and coach Mick Doyle has died in a road accident near Dungannon in Co Tyrone. Mr Doyle died when the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry on a stretch of road between Omagh and Dungannon known as Quinn's Corner. The 64-year-old, a native of Castleisland, Co Kerry, won 20 caps for Ireland between 1965 and 1968 and scored two tries for his country, the first on his debut against France at Lansdowne Road. He also toured Australia with Ireland in 1967 and South Africa with the Lions the following year. As a coach, he helped lead Ireland to Triple Crown and Five Nations titles in 1985. He later became a sports writer and published his autobiography, Doyler, in 1991.

Ireland rugby great Mick Doyle has been killed in a car crash.

During his second season in charge, Ireland claimed the Triple Crown, playing a style of attacking rugby which the country had never previously attempted.

Doyle's mantra of "give it a lash" suited the talents perfectly of gifted backs such as Trevor Ringland, Hugo McNeill, Keith Crossan and Paul Dean.

Heard that on the radio this morning, a big shock. His playing and managing days were a bit beofre my time although I vaguely remember my parents coming home after the 1985 Triple Crown. He was good on the radio too in recent years. RIP
