Looks like a strong enough squad. Obviously it's great to see Duffy back, along with O'Brien. Any ideas as to how they'll lineup?
Interestingly, the FAI article says that they will announce the new manager shortly, so I take it that McCaffrey won't be in charge for these games?

I think Don Givens is getting the job

so who actually picked that squad if there is no manager in charge at the moment

Koevermans? Looks a decent squad although I don't know much about a few of them. Who's Sean McGinty? Sounds like a Derry head...

Sean McGinty is english born as far as I can remember. Think United picked him up from Charlton couple season ago

Isn't Sean McGinty the name of a famous College teacher?
That lad McGinty is an English born defender who United signed from Charlton. I think he captained the U17s or U19s before. Here's his United profile: Sean McGinty (http://www.manutd.com/publish.sps?pagegid=%7B061AD8F0-B618-4CC3-838C-A9AEA6B5217A%7D&teamid=437&section=playerProfile&bioid=94141)

EDIT: RLP beat me to it.

Doolin makes changes to the U19 squad (http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=101297&catid=4&Itemid=12)

Injuries have forced the withdrawal from the original 18-man squad of Pat McEleney (Derry City), Sean McDermott (Arsenal) and Shane Byrne (Leicester City). Replacing them on the plane to Sofia on Sunday morning were Anton Rogers (Chelsea), Gary Shaw (Bray Wanderers) and Finn Harps goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher.

Dennis Irwin's son is in there? And a dude from Sky's Footballs Next Star. Weird. I'm not a huge LoI fan, is he any good - the Next Star guy?

Well he's not good enough for the premier division. He's on loan at Longford from Rovers. Doing OK for them apparently. He's been in every Irish squad for the past couple of years

Predator's post says the match is on at 4. Is that local time? Cause UEFA has 15:00, but that could be CET, meaning the match could be on here at 2. Does anyone know for sure?

3-0 res to Serbia. A win on saturday v bulgaria will most likely put us through. Even a draw will probably do given the goal difference.

From the GreenScene updates:
"Five goals, a clean sheet, eleven shots on target, you can’t really ask for more. Hopefully Trapattoni and the Irish senior team were looking at this match today. A masterclass of soccer. Well done boys."
High praise from that lad. 5-0 is a brilliant way to start your tenure as manager, even if it is against Luxembourg.

They drew with Turkey last year, so their under 19 side must not be too bad - I suppose those players are gone on to u21 now though.

EDIT: They had some of the same players, but Turkey had 22 shots in the match.

Yeah, you'd imagine a draw would be more than enough at this stage after a 5-0 win, and Bulgaria losing 3-0.

Maybe I'm being a bit cynical. By all accounts it was a convincing performance and it's certainly an impressive result.

a great result coming from behind as well
through to the Elite Round now, with the final game against Serbia (who beat Luxembourg 3-0) on Tuesday to determine the final standings.

Just checked the format there. Am I right in saying that there are 28 teams now through to the elite phase (after this round) meaning there will be 7 groups of 4, with only the 7 group winners qualifying along with Romania the hosts?? Really shows the fine line between success and failure at underage international level

AlaskaFox
09/10/2010, 8:12 PM
You're exactly right, same with the under 17s. 7 group winners and the hosts.

These boys don't seem to be having any trouble scoring. 7 goals scored in 2 games and only 1 conceded is fantastic.

Maybe only 2 strikers in the squad though with only 1 of those goals been scored by an out and out striker(Rafter).I guess McElaney has to come back into the squad for the elite phase. Brady might end up been a deep lying striker given his quality.Great to see him get a few months of injury free football hopefully he can get out on loan after christmas.

Tets, I knew that, but what I am trying to find out is what happened to him since. He was certainly talked of as having lots of potential and I was surprised a lower league club did not take him on.

going by some of the comments on that forum, it looks like he had the talent, but not the attitude.

I picked up the same vibes from Wigan forums, however, I still find it hard to believe that the likes of Dixon and Amos can just be thrown on the dungheap at such a young age after showing some ability in their teens.

It seems that the final game, against Serbia, is being played early (10am GMT). These lads have done well so far. It would be great if they could top the group.
Serbia U19 v Ireland U19 (http://en.uefa.com/under19/matches/season=2011/round=2000081/match=2001695/index.html)

Note: I just had a look at the Group 10 accumulated stats and Serbia have a total of 39 fouls committed, as opposed to Ireland's 27, and they've received 4 yellow cards and 1 red. I think it's fair to say that they'll be quite a physical side.

Without sounding too harsh, it happens very regularly. PLentyof hugely, hugely talented youngsters don't make it. About 95% of them
