Media Statement

At today's (April 27th) meeting of the eircom League Security Committee, events before and during the eircom League Premier Division fixture between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers of Friday April 16th were discussed, and reports from the Event Controller and eircom League Security Committee Match Observer were also reviewed.

It was decided that the eircom League will contact all parties concerned in relation to the three remaining league fixtures involving Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers after which the Committee will decide on the appropriate security and other arrangements for those fixtures at its next scheduled meeting, Tuesday May 18th 2004.

In response to certain reportage concerning events which took place before the April 16th fixture, the eircom League Security Committee wishes to state that, on the basis of the security intelligence available to it, there is no evidence to support media assertions that regular, pre-planned violence exists or is common-place within the eircom League.

The eircom League Security Committee will continue to assist all eircom League clubs with all aspects of event management, security and intelligence initiatives and any necessary preventative measures in relation to League and other fixtures as appropriate.

The eircom League Security Committee has also announced that following on from last October's successful Football Safety Management Forum, a further Forum - comprising representatives from the eircom League, clubs and the statutory authorities - will be held in Dublin on Saturday, May 15th at which safety, health and welfare, security, policing, stewarding and other issues will be discussed. Further details on the Forum will be announced shortly.

Issued on behalf of the eircom League Security Committee.
