Am I right in thinking that for both these matches, Wim Koevermans will be managing?

Correct! Strong Squad. Lets hope they continue to improve following the end of the Reign of terror of Don Givens...

Lost 1-0 in Switzerland. Not such a bad result as the Swiss have been strong at this level for quite a while now. By all acounts we played well enough but didn't take the chances. Koevermans was in charge.

That has to be the most glowing article I've ever read for a losing team.;)

Yes the Swiss are relatively strong at this level but it wasn't their first choice 11 that played. I know we were missing a couple of our better players but there is an urgency to address the amount of defeats we are recording at U21 level and narrow defeat or not, it's still another defeat.

Paddy Madden, Karl Sheppard and Seamus Conneely in; Anthony Stokes, Gaving Gunning, Alan Judge, Shane O'Connor and Eddie Nolan ruled out.

Domestic trio get under-21 call-up

Soccer : Three League of Ireland players have been called into the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad ahead of Tuesday's European Championship qualifier against Turkey.

Bohemians striker Paddy Madden and Galway United pair Seamus Conneely and Karl Sheppard have been drafted in by temorary manager Wim Koevermans to the squad after Alan Judge (groin), Gavin Gunning (groin), Anthony Stokes (suspended), Eddie Nolan (suspended) and Shane O’Connor were ruled our.

Judge and Gunning both picked-up their injuries during 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in Lugano, while Stokes and Nolan received yellow cards that ruled them out of the final game of the campaign.

O’Connor, himself was a late replacement for the injured Owen Garvan, was injured in training on Thursday.

Friday's defeat followed a familiar pattern for Ireland, who dominated the first half but failed to put the ball in the net.

“It was a strange game,” said Koevermans. “In the first half we played very well and created some great chances, but it’s not enough to create chances you also have to score them. If we had scored two or three of them then it probably would have been game over, but the Swiss made a change to their midfield at half time and after two minutes of the second half they scored.

"The game turned a little bit in the second half. We brought on an extra striker to try to get the equaliser but it wasn’t to be. We deserved to get a goal but unfortunately it didn’t happen.”

Derry's Shane McEleney and Dundalk's Daniel Kearns called up to the squad. McEleney's inclusion surprises me a bit.

Two more Airtricity League players have been drafted into the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA European Championship qualifier against Turkey. Shane McEleney (Derry City) and Daniel Kearns (Dundalk) will link-up with the squad later today and will strengthen a squad which has been hit by injury and suspension.

Five members of the squad returned to their clubs following last Friday’s match against Switzerland in Lugano. Anthony Stokes and Eddie Nolan were both booked in that match, which ruled them out of Tuesday’s game in Turkey, while Alan Judge (groin), Gavin Gunning (groin) and Shane O’Connor (hamstring) all picked-up injuries.

Paddy Madden (Bohemians), Seamus Conneely (Galway United) and Karl Sheppard (Galway United) have already linked-up with the squad and they will be joined later today by McEleney and Kearns.

Goes to show that Koevermans is paying attention to the domestic leagues, at least. Impressive.

Why so?

McEleney's a decent player, but I thought there would have been better defensive options available that are playing at a higher standard than the League of Ireland First Division. I'm not even sure if McEleney is a starter for the U19s. Either way, hopefully he can take his chance.

Sorry Charlie, the dry sarcasm was lost on you. Before you joined foot.ie there was a lot of clamour for LOI players to be included. When they were, it was dismissed as patronising. Usual damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario for FAI.

Reads like it was pretty even up to the goal.

Seamus Conneely plays right full with Galway. Not sure if he would have started as a centre half.
