Treacy banged in what sounds like a cracking winner for Preston.

Carling Cup on tonight in England. Plenty of Irish in action but of most note in context of the Armenia game is probably that McShane was substituted on 22 minutes and St Ledger was substituted at half time, suggesting both got injuries of some degree. Defenders are rarely taken off that early. O'Dea was subbed on 60 minutes for Ipswich but it looks like it was part of a double substitution so was probably tactical or match fitness related.

I'll let Tets deliver the full details!

We can only hope.

Half-time saw Keith's Republic of Ireland teammate Sean St. Ledger make way for youngster Bailey Wright who was making his second first team appearance for the Whites with his other coming in the previous round against Stockport County two weeks ago. But Ferguson insisted this was simply a procaution for Saturday - not wanting his prized asset to be any worse for wear come the showdown against the Blades at Brammall Lane. The gaffer added: "Sean is a complete procaution - he will be ok for Saturday. We thought we would give it five minutes but he has said look I don't want to risk it and we made the decision between us.

There are a trio of Irishmen in Scandinavia that have only been mentioned on here a few times by one guy awhile back.

Pat Walker who played for Bohs and the u21s is the manager of Tippeligaen (top league in Norway, though they're surely relegated) side Sandefjord while his two (Sweden-born) sons, Kevin and Robert, play for AIK (Allsvenskan -- top league in Sweden -- champions last year) and Jönköpings Södra (second tier in Sweden), respectively.

As already mentioned, Anto Flood is with Örebro in Sweden until the end of the season. He's been an unused sub in 4 league games since joining late July/early August.

Has anyone heard of a Japanese player called Robert Cullen (http://202.248.89.204/eng/profile/22.php)? I'm came across him a while ago through Wikipedia and thought the name stood out as particularly bizarre given he had international honours for Japan's under-20 side. Turned out, he was born in Ibaraki to a Japanese mother and a father from Northern Ireland, so presumably he'd be eligible to play for us. Not that I'm necessarily suggesting we should be going after him as he is now playing with Roasso Kumamoto in the J. League Division 2, but I just thought it was a rather interesting one. He played with the highly-esteemed (in Asian football, at least) Júbilo Iwata of the J. League Division 1 up until this season.

Edit: Just to add that Cullen won the J. League Rookie of the Year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._League_Rookie_of_the_Year) in 2005.

Sorry if this has been brought up on another thread, but does anybody know anything about Chinedu Vine? He's a Nigeran born youngster(Irish passport holder) who was recently picked up by Portsmouth from Home Farm.

I'm not certain he'd actually be eligible to play for us. Presumably, his nationality was dependent on residence. Therefore, he would not qualify automatically under article 15 of FIFA's current statutes. I assume article 17 would be of relevance:

Acquisition of a new nationality
Any Player who refers to art. 15 par. 1 to assume a new nationality and who has not played international football in accordance with art. 15 par. 2 shall be eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfi ls one of the following conditions:
(a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
(d) He has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant Association.

Seeing as he's only 15/16, I suspect he doesn't satisfy any of those criteria, which would lead me to believe he isn't eligible to play for us despite being an Irish national.

Did you forget to add Sheridans game last sunday ?
All the stats you sent me had the month set to September, and one was for November, so I didn't add them.
I never add a game before it has been played. Who did they play last week?

TheBoss
29/08/2010, 4:18 PM
I re-sent it to you.

29/08/2010, 4:40 PM
I re-sent it to you.
Thanks, but you're still entering the month as "9", August is the 8th month.
I've changed the form slightly for the next set of games, you select the month from a drop down box, rather than entering it manually

TheBoss
29/08/2010, 4:42 PM
I typed:
'22' in the first box
'08' in the second
'2010' in the third

29/08/2010, 4:51 PM
hmmm, that's odd, it's being sent with the month set as 9. I'll investigate

<EDIT>

think I have it fixed now, stupid zero-based month system (i.e. 0=january, 1=february, 2=march, etc)
Sorry about that Boss, my bad

Daryl Murphy scored a penalty on his first start for Celtic
Cillian Sheridan scored his first goal for CSKA Sofia

There's no games for the Premiership, SPL and Championship clubs this month, so I'll compile the August stats tomorrow, and archive off the stats for last season
By default, I don't include clubs outside those 3 leagues, so should I include Sheridan and McGeady in the monthly stats?

Tets gets an honourable reference in today’s Indo, but with a “must try harder” footnote :)

Anoraks of a particular persuasion can chart the progress of any Irish-qualified individuals on the various rungs of the UK football ladder. But they missed the man with the cliche-inducing surname, and a distinctly Irish complexion.

Irish Abroad Statistics for August 2010: http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/MonthlyStats
David Norris won 5 games to reflect Ipswich's strong start to the Championship season, scoring 4 goals to also top the goalscorers table with Adam Rooney, and picking up 4 bookings along the way
Ipswich won 2 and drew 1 of these games, while Inverness Caledonian Thistle won both games that Rooney scored in
Damien Duff drew 3 games in August
Darren Randolph is the unfortunate owner of the most losses in August, although this does include 2 losses in the Europa League preliminary rounds
Thanks to these extra European games, Randolph is also joint top of the most starts table, with 6, along with Paddy McCarthy, Wes Hoolahan, Marc Wilson and David Norris
Of these only Randolph, Norris and Wilson completed 90 minutes in every game.
Along with starting the most games, Wes Hoolahan was the most substituted player in August, the Norwich winger was withdrawn from the action 4 times
Conversely Ronan Murray was the most introduced substitute. The Ipswich Town player came off the bench 4 times
Unsurprisingly, two goalkeepers top the most unused substitute table, Shay Given and Saul Deeney both remained on the bench 5 times

I've added in some facebook and twitter (they're the latest thing!) buttons to attract more attention to the site using social networking

Following Padraig Amond's transfer to Portugal, and Barry Maguire's recent declaration that he wants to play for Ireland, I'm looking for a volunteer to track both player's progress in the Portuguese and Dutch leagues respectively, for the Irish Abroad site, similar to what irishfan86 and The Boss are doing for me with McGeady and Sheridan.

It takes about 5 minutes, and involves filling out a short form on the site about the game itself, and if the player in question played or not.

If nobody volunteers by the end of the day, I'll offer it to ybig.ie

robbie_B

I spoke to him yesterday after the game and he basically said that at the moment he isn't thinking too much about his international career, he just signed a one-year contract extension at QPR and under Warnock he looks a much, much better player.

His mother is Irish and he qualifies for Nigeria through his Dad and obviously played for England at youth level. He said if he can keep up his good form and QPR keep winning he will see what happens with regards international football.

Billy Mehmet (ex St Mirren, played for our U21s 6 years ago) scored Genclerbirligi's (of Ankara) opening goal against Istanbul BBSK (4th team in Istanbul) from the penalty spot in tonights Turkish Premier League.

Genclerbirligi have recently signed a lot of English-speaking players (NZ's Shane Smeltz, Aussie Mile Jedinak and ex Hearts player Micheal Stewart).
