The main fans who could answer this from the exact situation they're in now would be Sporting Fingal or Shamrock Rovers fans, but Bohs, Dundalk, and anyone else obviously have their own view:
Given the choice between your team winning the Premier Division title and your team being the first to break into a Europa League / Champions League Group Stage, which would you choose?

Champions League group stage, or Europa League, or just not losing 6-0 in Bulgaria!

group stages of course. the biggest reason you'd want to win the league is to be in europe and on a wider scale getting to the group stages will do a lot more for a club and the league than winning the league. plus you'd get a way more money & general interest from getting to the group stages.

Surely breaking into the Champions League groups would require winning the league...

Personally I think it depends on the club.
Our club needs as much exposure as possible so I would take the group stages of Europe and finishing 3rd so we can play in europe again next year.
If you want to prove who is the best team in Ireland then winning the league is what its all about and hopefully someday we will, but thats not really our aim this season.
The group stages of the Europa would bring us more exposure than winning the league unfortunately and this would be the best thing for the club from a financial and promotional point of view
Dont get me wrong, Iv always thought (like most) winning a league is a true definition of the best team, and cup competitions are not always the case, but its more important for our club to make headlines and create as much interest as possible in order to create a decent fan base. Which has to be the priority
Other clubs and fans may/will have other opinions on what they want their club to priorities.

Group stages. No question. I find it slightly odd that a Rovers fan would choose winning the league (again) seeing as they've won it so many times in the past.
Group stages without a doubt, as there would be a high probability that you would get drawn with some of the giants of the European game, even in the Europa, although Rovers will get that anyway please god if they get a result in Israel

For me as a United fan, has to be winning the League. We've never done it, and don't look like doing it any time soon, but I live for the day we can fly the League Champions flag over Terryland (or even better, over a ground we own). We have won just one FAI Cup and 2 League Cups in 34 seasons, so for me, it has to be the league title

They've won it once in the last 23 years, and its the only thing they've won at the top level in that time. Very understandable that they'd want to win something.

It's a bit of an strange question. To qualify for the CL group stage you need to win the league first. The easiest way to get the to the group stage of either comp is via the back door to the Europa League which Bohs were eyeing this season. To do that you need to win the league first, too. The only other route to the EL groups involves beating 2 or 3 good Euro teams.... and any Irish club that can do that should with the league easily. So give me a Dundalk team that's good enough to qualify for the group stage- they'll inevitably win the league... best of both worlds! (Please note, we're concentrating on the League Cup this season)

No brainer really, from a club perspective - Europe every time (money, prestige, money :D). Think many fans though might prefer to win the League - chance to be called "champions" etc etc especialy for clubs (how to put it  ) unfamiliar with success.

Simply answering the question posed - which is why I quoted it !!!!! Cant believe any club would choose League win over Group stage qualification although some fans would - didnt say either was achievable or not. Dont worry, doubt you will ever have to worry about either

We have won the league before. There is nothing to stop us from doing it again in the future.
I see European progression as something that will never happen for a team in this country in any case.
As for Europe, we did nothing with half a squad and a paltry budget last year. "The Big Club" did nothing with the biggest squad and budget in the league this year.
i'll let you have the last word on it now though as it is usually important to you.;)

Long time reader first time poster.
Odd question to be fair.
IMO reaching the group stages of a european competition would almost certainly guarantee the domestic league title for a fair few years after that, considering the amount of money it would generate for a club.
or to simplify group stages of europe for me thanks.

Tough choice, CL group qual or LOI champions?
CL group qualification, €4m straight up, plus €12m approx, 1 draw €400k plus gate receipts etc.
Winning LOI, prize €200k.

Group stage every day of the week for me as well.
If Derry got into the group stage then league titles would be almost guaranteed the following few years with the money it would bring.

Are you quoting directly from Derry City's financial plan about 18 months ago?
Baby steps. League win first. Guaranteed prize money leading to another league with guaranteed prize money leading to more investment leading to antoher league with guaranteed prize money...stable financial footing...glory..
Or hoping that a big team with big tv rights comes along...and not a group comprising TNS, Kilmarnock, Zimbru Chisinau and some Albanian team trying to throw matches...

Cant agree more.
Has to be League titles every time or even top four finish every year.
European qualification with money invested in better squad and facilities(so you can at least host your own European games) leading to top four finish/ league title with European qualification money invested etc etc.

Jeez lads, think about it.Get into the group satge of the Europa league and the money that would bring would be x20 times what a league title brings.
It doesn't matter what teams are in the group with you as you're bound to get great TV money as well as prize money.
Sets your club up for years therefore greater chance to deliver a league title the following year/s.

Anyone who hasn't won the league! I'd prefer a first league win to making the Europa League groups (or Champions' League groups in the unlikely situation of the league getting two CL spots). After winning the league, I'd go for Champions' League groups.

Europe any day of the week, any hour of the day, any minute of the hour. You get my drift.
Simple matter of arithmetic.
League = 36 games over 8 months
Europe = 6 games (max) over 6 weeks.
When we go out of Europe in two weeks time, we have a league title to fight for.
I think I'd rather the league tbh.
Can you be greedy and say Both!
See that's the great thing about football. You can be as greedy as you like. There's no limit on aspirations and you don't have to choose one competition over another. Just compete in every game and see where it gets you. So I'll have a league and cup double please, with Group Stages qualification on the side.

Sad thread but highlights the ordeal our clubs are in.
Winning the league gets you thanks on this site and maybe a cuntish remark from a workmate.
Getting into Europa /CL groups gets you thanks on boards.ie and maybe a cuntish remark from a workmate.
Neither get you fans only begrudgers and 3 game blowins.

Derry were in the CL a couple of years ago without winning the league. They played Pyunik of Armenia if I remember correctly.

Is this correct? How did it happen, seeing as LOI has only 1 spot, for the league winners?
