View Full Version : Would it be possible?

A thought occured to me the other day.

I am a football fan (like, I'd imagine everyone else here is!), with only the four 'poverty channels' (RTE 1/2 TV3, TG4) on my television, where, to cater to the wishes of the public, much of sports news is related to the English Premier League.

My family gets the Irish Independent daily, and when All-Ireland GAA season is over, the front of the sports pages (and occasionally the top banner of the paper itself) is relating to the next top-of-the-table tie, or latest big result.

When the news or Premier Soccer Saturday / Sunday is not on, Aertel's 220 is always plastered with EPL news, with League of Ireland match reports thrown in as well, obviously.

My friends all support the English Premier League, and talk about it in school. Slagging each other off, 'We (Chelsea) hammered you (Man United - nevermind the fact that you're actually from Roscrea . . .) at the weekend.'

And passing by any Ladbroke's, Bambury's or Paddy Power bookies you'll also be shown a special offer on United beating Villa 2 - 1.

And of course, having followed Liverpool alot when I was younger, my eye is trained to take note of all this news as it streams by in every media outlet.

Now this just comes across as a medley of League of Ireland supporters complains about 'the biased media and country full of barstoolers' but I actually have a point here :P

As a football fan, could I feasibly last until May without knowing how the English Premier League is going? Or is it actually shoved down our throats to the extent that I couldn't, that at the very least I'd hear the occasional big result between City and Spurs?

IN SHORT: Is it possible to be a football fan living in Ireland, yet remain totally ignorant of the goings-on in the English Premier League?

Yes, if you're a deaf and blind football fan.

And yet I have to go out of my way to see how Limerick are doing. Hmm.
