Town Legend

It is with great sadness that I've just heard the news of the passing of Anthony 'Jelly' Keenan. He was a great servant to Longford Town and also his home town Athlone. He also had stints at Cobh Ramblers and Monaghan United. A sad loss to the local community.

Deepest sympathies goes out to his family.

May he Rest in Peace

I can't say I've heard of him, but it's sad to lose somebody who has contributed to the LOI and the LOI community.

RIP.

RIP Jelly

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends

Anthony was part of the first Athlone Town League of Ireland-winning squad of 1980-81 and also played between the posts for Longford Town, Cobh Ramblers and Monaghan Utd. When I heard the news yesterday it got me thinking and I believe he made his Athlone Town debut away to Standard Liege in the European Cup.

Awww no. RIP. I was chatting to him a few years ago in Athlone after a Legends game thingy and he was telling me about his time in Monaghan and how he loved the LOI so much. Very sad to hear this. On behalf of all at Monaghan United FC, I offer our condolences to his family and friends.

Very sorry to hear of his passing. RIP. I can remember him playing for one season for Ramblers
in the early 90's. Iirc he made his debut for us in a League Cup win over City, which I suppose will always endear you to the home team;).
May he rest in peace.

was jelly first choice keeper in 80/81? Jelly was one of the first town goalies that I can remember from going to early town matches. In his first spell with us he replaced Jude Quigley in late 1988 in goal and stayed on till the end of the 1990/91 season. He then departed to Cobh Ramblers and was resigned by us from Athlone Town in early 1997 when he replaced Jacko Smyth in goals and stayed there under Mickey O'Connors management till end of 1997/98 season.

may he rest in peace. There will be a tribute to him in our match program this weekend against Cork City, He is that high in my respect for him that he deserves a tribute.
