Just saw this a minute ago. 1000mbs of storage!! compare that with Hotmails 2mbs. And it's all free!!!
From Gmail.com
Google approach to email.
Gmail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want. The key features are:
Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.
Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.
Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.
No pop-up ads. No banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest.
Sounds Good.
Dunno how i'd ever use 1000MB in a mail a/c but always on the look out for new mail providers so can get a/c somehow close to my christian+surname.
Did they give you an a/c yet?

I tryed but I think that they only gave out a few addresses on a trial period. You can sign up for updates though.
1Gb sounds great, at least you can keep any photos you get and dont have to go on deleting sprees every now and then.

There's always a downside.
Google plans to send users links to advertising based on the content of messages determined by a computer scan of their correspondence, and presumed interests. They're also making the provision for the permanent storage of email.
At the moment when you use their internet search engine you receive advertisements for commercial sites linked to your search topic and Gmail would use similar technology to scan emails and offer advertisements.
Google says the content of users' email would remain private because the process would be fully automated.
"No humans read your emails to target the ads," Google's web site states.
Gmail's proposed message storage system allows for free storage for each user of the equivalent of 500,000 pages of email. This is listed among Gmail's benefits
The drawback? Its terms of use acknowledge that "residual copies of email may remain on our systems, even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the termination of your account".
In other words, when you delete something it is never actually deleted and can be retrieved at any time by Google.
For most people that's a small price to pay for a quality web based mail utility.
...quality web based mail utility.
Anyone want to recommend a good (even pay) web mail service that I have reasonable chance of getting christian.surname@webaddy.com or such?

This G mail thing was launched on 01.04.04 so dunno ... AFAIK they have said that it is not a windup.
Wait and see i tupose but dont like the idea of them crawling through your mail a TARGETING you specific needs. It have come a long way since the issue was if you unchecked a box to have mail sent to you .... "no human will read through your mail" ... whenever was there a human reading through anything

There still only in the Beta stage as far as I know.
Therefore it's not yet open to the general public yet.

It's being tested by Google staff, much like Orkut (http://www.orkut.com/). It's not an April Fools joke, although it was released on that day specifically to cause confusion and generate more PR. This (http://www.google.com/jobs/lunar_job.html) is Google's real April Fools joke. Gmail is a nightmare from the privacy and personal security point of view, the 1GB of space is very much a bribe in exchange for profiling. I doubt Google has that specifically in mind at the moment, but Google won't be a private company for very much longer. How many billion-dollar corporations do you trust?
