View Full Version : U19 squad named for Elite qualifiers

Greg Cunningham was called up to the senior side for the two friendlies next week, personally I would have let him play with the U19's
It's a strong looking midfield, with Henderson, Clifford, Brady and Hourihane but defence and up front looks weak. West Ham's Daniel Kearns is included, isn't his eligibility part of the Northern Ireland case with CAS?

Conor Clifford, have not heard much about him for a few months.

u must have been stuck down a cave
he just captained chelsea to their first fa youth cup victory in donkeys years, scoring the winning goal in the process.
on the back of that success he received a lot of newspaper and radio coverage in the irish sports media the last month
on the other hand, robbie brady doesnt seem to have made much progress at united this season for someone who was rated so highly going over

At the Galway Utd UCD game last night, I thought I heard the announcer say that Karl Sheppard had been called up for this squad. Was I hearing things?

1-0's not a 'bad' result, but obviously there was a chance to set ourselves up for qualification. Nice to see that we can hold our own against our most illustrious neighbors.
Ukraine on Friday on Bosnia & Herzegovina Sunday. They play later this evening. A draw would suit.

England won 4-0 today meaning Ireland have to win their remaining two games.
Two changes to the line up today, Karl Sheppard and James Keohane in for Ronan Murray and Harry Crawford.
1 Gerard Hanley (GK)
2 Richard Towell
3 John Dunleavy
4 Sean McGinty
5 Shane McEleney
6 Conor Hourihane
8 Conor Clifford (C
10 Conor Henderson
11 Robert Brady
17 James Keohane
18 Karl Sheppard
Looks like 4-5-1 to me but maybe they've pushed Brady forward.

1-0 up thanks to a Clifford penalty after 60 mins.
Robert Brady has been sent off though just after half time.
Backs against the wall stuff now. Our underage sides have been in this situation countless times before,
lets hope they hold on........

Nail biting stuff. Hanley booked (probably for time wasting). 4 LOI players in starting line up.
Edit:
Ah ****...
Its only the group winners that go through.... So what happens if we beat Bosnia, and Ukraine beat England.
3 teams on 6 points, all beaten each other. Goal difference?
At the moment
Ireland 0
England +5
Ukraine +2
If Ukraine win by 1 or 2, we have to win by 4 or more so.
Second Edit:
Presumably have to score 4 or more without Robbie Brady.
Excellent Result all the same, credit to them.

Equality of points at mini-tournaments
6.09 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the ranking of the teams in question:
a) Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question.
b) Superior goal difference resulting from the group matches played among the teams in question.
c) Higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question.
d) If, after having applied criteria a) to c), two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) will be reapplied to determine the ranking of the two teams.
If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) and f) will apply.
e) Results of all group matches:
1. Superior goal difference.
2. Higher number of goals scored.
f) Drawing of lots.
So we hope Ukraine (who are still in with a chance of qualifying) beat England and beat Bosnia by 4 goals more than the Ukraine to finish with a better goal difference than the Ukraine or England
e.g. Ukraine beat England 1-0, we need to beat Bosnia 5-0
Ukraine beat England 2-0, we need to beat Bosnia 6-0, etc
geysir

Good work Tets
e.g. Ukraine beat England 1-0, we need to beat Bosnia 5-0
Ukraine beat England 2-0, we need to beat Bosnia 6-0, etc
But you have to read 6.09b again.
b) Superior goal difference resulting from the group matches played among the teams in question.
at least by my understanding .
What we score against Bosnia is irrelevant, they are not one of the "teams in question".
Charlie Darwin
29/05/2010, 4:28 PM
The way I'm reading it, the only way we can qualify is to beat Bosnia by 5 or more and for Ukraine to win 1-0 against England (any other result will see us out).
geysir
29/05/2010, 4:34 PM
And if Ukraine win by 2 they are through
Schumi

b) Superior goal difference resulting from the group matches played among the teams in question.
at least by my understanding .
What we score against Bosnia is irrelevant, they are not one of the "teams in question".
If Ukraine beat England 1-0, the goal difference and goals scored between the three teams will be the same and we'll have to win by 4 goals against Bosnia to get through. Any other result between England and Ukraine and we're out.
edit: Ukraine 1-0 England and Ireland 4-0 Bosnia will have us drawing lots with England I think.

England would qualify based on their result against us.
No, thats null and void after Criteria a). Going down to the list of criteria, tets had it almost right.(Ukraine 2-0, Ireland 6-0 wouldn't work, Ukraine through on most goals, criteria c))
If Ukraine win 1-0, then we would get to criteria e).
1. Goal Difference: England 4, Ukraine 3, Ireland? (if we win by 5 then we're through. Win by 4? Who knows? Does it go to the next criteria, including or excluding Ukraine?)
2. Higher number of goals scored: England 5, Ukraine 5. Ireland 5(assuming we get to this stage). Then it goes to the next stage.
3. Drawing of lots. (Probably just ourselves and England)
In all likelihood, the only minute possibility is a 1-0, 5-0 combo(4-0 would lead to drawing of lots), as we can't affect criteria a to d at this stage so have to win on goal difference.
Strange how they can make it so complicated yet it could all come down to goal difference in the end.
Charlie Darwin
29/05/2010, 5:27 PM
You're right, actually - I thought overall goal difference had been applied before (d).
It seems a bit illogical. If England, Ukraine and ourselves are locked on goal difference, (a) to (c) are applied. If Ukraine are then eliminated on overall results, why don't they just reapply (a) for the two remaining teams instead of drawing lots?
geysir
29/05/2010, 8:15 PM
Mary Poppins would have brought us back to A.
Should it be a 1 nil victory for Ukraine, they would be eliminated at the E1 goal difference stage.
I"d prefer drawing lots with England than going back to A :)
Never look back.
What are the odds, 500/1?
a Ukraine 1 nil victory.
Us to win by 4.
Evens on the short straw.

had a look on fai.ie to see if there was anything about the permutations and combinations of the final games
from the review of the U19 game: http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=101005&catid=4&Itemid=12
In today's other game, England shrugged off the challenge of Bosnia & Herzegovina in a 4-0 victory which sends them top of the table with six points from two games. That result means that Ireland must now rely on Ukraine to defeat England by a single goal in the final game and they themselves must defeat Bosnia & Herzegovina by more than four goals to secure their passage to the UEFA Championship finals in France this summer.
Brady seems to have been one of the main goal threats in the two games, can we get 4 without him?

Whatever happens, it's great to have prospects like Robert Brady, Conor Clifford and Conor Henderson in the youth setup.
