I'm sickened towards the attitude of barstoolers who I know are attending this, some of them don't know who Utd are playing. "Some Irish team" they say. FFS.
I would absolutly love to see ManUre get beat tomorrow and see the look on their faces.

As a general rule of thumb, it's best to assume that everything Roddy says is wrong.
It just saves time....

No self respecting LOI fan should be going to this barstool convention so delighted the price is so high. same applies to bogball mind you.
???
What's the inference here? That as an LOI supporter I shouldn't go to football or hurling matches?
Would you get off it!

Chip, shoulder, massive.
Apparently everyone should pick just one team in the whole world that plays just one sport (and it has to be a LOI team or it doesn't count!) to be considered a true fan. Otherwise you are just a johnny come lately and know nothing about anything.
That type of sh1te (snobbery basically) p1sses me off and it gives LOI fans a bad name.

Why let the opinion of one internet poster influence your opinion of the over 10,000 people that regularly attend games?

Fair enough and good point

Are they mutually exclusive. Can you not do both? Or God forbid, even support GAA aswell!

Oh that they were ! for some people, a small, small minority they can be but unfortunately the vast majority of EPL (alledged) fans will never darken the turnstiles unless "their" team are "over".
No offence, but always found it wrong to hear irish fans cheering for any foreign team against an Irish team. Still, if it rocks your boat...............

I never said I would be shouting for the "foreign" team tonite!!
Just get annoyed when I see this LOI snobbery and superiority complex coming out.
Some people live no where near a LOI team so would have as much allegiance to for example Bohemians as they would Scunthorpe. Surely it is up to them who they support then and should not be thought of as any less for doing it. A lot of these people may also play Junior or local football, so are in effect supporting Irish football, but that should not mean they can't enjoy an affinity with Scunthorpe FC aswell.

See I defended you on the GAA nagle but can't on this issue.
The "lives nowhere near" argument is pathetic as there isn't anyone in Ireland more than 90 minutes away from a League of Ireland club. They choose to support British sides instead, with absolutely no regard for locality.
Anyway, its been done to death so can we move on and get back to tonight's game

Yep, 80% + of The Irish "football loving public" live nearer Liverpool/Manchester than their nearest LOI ground  time to put away the shovel mate.
from my office window I can see the man ure flag flying outside the new Lansdowne, truely a great day for Irish football.

whats the difference between tonights match and all the friendlies against foreign clubs that Irish clubs play all the time?
dont the fai fund MNS for example and other lge of Ireland activities? havent they just built a new stadium that they have to pay for?
where do you all expect them to get the money to do all of the above and their work at grassroots level also?
genuienly cant understand all the anger against tonights fixture yet rovers play real madrid last season and its a differant story. interesting one really.
id say the Irish players playing tonight are delighted to be involved in such a game.... but sure what do they matter?!

I'd tend to agree with you, but...
-The way it'd been handled is quite bad, staging it right in the run-in of the LOI season
-The fact that it's Man U, and the accompanying barstooler ****fest winds people up. I don't think people would be so irritated if we were playing Barcelona or Inter Milan, as opposed to a team many people are actively ditching our own league for.

All Irish clubs are on their knees. They need every penny they can get. The FAI have signed a contract that means LOI clubs CANNOT host games like this on order to fundraise

What other LOI activities? They also earn substantial participation fees from clubs, not to mention sponsors for various competitions, so they’re not bankrolling the whole show…

Why do you think they did that, if they couldn’t afford to pay for it?

The reasons for it have been clearly explained throughout this thread. If you can’t understand them, I’d have to surmise that you’re a bit slow.
id say the Irish players playing tonight are delighted to be involved in such a game.... but sure what do they matter?!
Irish players have shown very clearly over the past number of years that they don’t have the best interests of the game at heart, so in no way should their interests be the deciding factor in any issue
When you add in various factors like the FAI postponing competitive fixtures for this game, not allowing Limerick play Barcelona, not allowing Bohs v bray clash with a Champions League qualifier despite this game clashing, the LOI publicity machine in overdrive for this when they barely mentioned clubs European games this year, the fact that players will have to play again on Friday night and numerous other cringeworthy factors its clear there are plenty of possible reasons for people not to like this game
But if you can’t understand any of them..
16 pages on a match that nobody wants to happen...?
Give me a break. The majority of the people who are so anti this game will be glued to it tonight, make no mistake.

The FAI could've paid for a large part of their contribution to the stadium upfront, if they'd taken the offer on the vantage tickets that was turned down. Also, they're taking money from the grassroots to pay for the stadium - clubs at all levels were "persuaded" to take up the aforementioned unsold vantage club tickets. And I dare say there was also a fair amount of arm twisting to take tickets for tonight’s Manchester United promotion night too. Apart from the fee, do you think United are doing it for the good of their health or for the feckin prestige? Can you genuinely not see the difference between the FAI running a promotion night for one of the LoI's biggest competitors and clubs hosting their own friendlies?

Football fans watch football on tele SHOCKER! It's not the same as ponying up for a ticket and going down with their half ireland/ half United scarf.
Maybe not, but quite funny really.
I know I'll be watching, hoping against hope that maybe, just maybe, Ndo nutmegs Gary Neville, Richie Ryan scores afree kick or Peers wins a header against Berbatov. Oh the surge of pride will be enormous, won't it?
Then we can all devote another 16 pages to chatting about the game we wish never happened.

As opposed to a slient protest in front of a blank TV screen? I wont be watching it (haven't the time this evening) but most football fans I know will try and watch as much football as thye can on TV. Doesn't mean they think its a great idea

Nah Sheppard is far too hot and cold, and mostly cold. Madden is a far better player. Interesting to see he hasn't started the league's best midfielder, thankfully, the last thing we need is to loose him to an injury. Hopefully Joey and Peers only play the first half.

so bray didnt play villareal and bohs didnt play aston villa recently?
the barca v limerick match wouldve been a financial disaster given the small crowd that wouldve turned up. limerick / munster people just dont turn up to these things.
never said the FAI bank rolled the whole lge.
so the fai shouldnt have got involved with the new stadium??
personalising your argument with the "a bit slow" comment is poor posting really but maybe it will earn you another green dot. well done

The small crowd that would have turned up to watch one of the biggest clubs in the world? Come off it.
The games you mention don't constitute "Games like this" as per Dodge's post. Limerick v Barca does.
(And sorry Dodge - I know you're well able to answer for yourself too...)

There's also the question of saturation. The casual fans over here are probably pretty sick of seeing the same 5 or 6 English teams come over to play in games like this. It's probably only fans of the Premiership clubs specifically and the odd LoI fan who attends these games, that's certainly the way it looked at the Villa-Bohs game anyway. If it was Limerick vs Barcelona, there would be A LOT more casual interest to see a team live that one never or very rarely gets the chance to see live.
But United arent even my reason for hating this game, it's that, for ever, the answer to the question "What was the first soccer match ever played at the Aviva stadium?" will basically be "a desperate fundraiser" rather than something we can have a bit of pride in.

Is it a sell out?
I doubt it. but then again the rugby was a "sell out" apparently 40k tickets had been sold but the attendance was 35k and that was at a tenner a ticket compared to tonights at a min of €45 per ticket.

According to another forum I'm on, they read somewhere that the FAI have declared it a sell out
so the fai shouldnt have got involved with the new stadium??
Not if they can't afford it. Simple business sense
personalising your argument with the "a bit slow" comment is poor posting really
Then stop trying to use the "I can't understand" argument. Either you can't understand it (ie you're a bit slow), or you can understand it and choose not to

What I'm hoping is that some of United's star players (Rooney would be perfect) pick up a few injuries which would keep them out for a month or two (nothing life threatening or overly serious, but something niggling which would stop them playing until October).

From Extra Time interview with Paddy Madden:
'Madden is delighted to be in the squad to face the side he has supported all his life and is looking forward to facing some of the world’s best players... '
“When I heard that I’d got into the squad I was chuffed, because as a United fan I’m getting to play against the team I support all my life” '
That's what we're up against in a nutshell.
There is no hope.

Event junkies don't care for the Irish national team vs subpar opposition. If Ireland vs Australia or Ireland vs South Africa were held in Croke Park, the attendance wouldn't be that different.
Meanwhile, thousands show up to get autographs of Cristiano Ronaldo, etc.
You're actually telling me that the people of Munster not wanting to see Irealdn Reserves vs Tim Cahill or Stephen Pienaar means they don't want to see Lionel Messi, David Villa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan? (unsure how many of these would've been available)
Charlie Darwin

Only Ibrahimovic and Bojan would have been there. Still, it would have outsold the Ireland games, but I'm not convinced it would have been a sell-out.
