Check your nearest animal shelter, there will be loads after Christmas and they'll have been spayed and given their injections

Yeah, the nearest shelter would be my first port of call. There are a few cats for adoption here as well: http://www.catsaid.org/adopt_a_cat/adopt_cat.html , http://www.irishanimals.ie/cat_homes.html and a few numbers to ring here http://www.irishanimals.ie/cat_homes.html .

There's certainly no shortage of cats who could do with a home.

DSPCA usually have loads of cats, but I think it's around €60 to home one, which I suspect is what you might be trying to avoid. It's coming into kitten season now so keep an eye on the papers and message boards, there'll be people giving away kittens all over the place.

Yep Its €80 to "adopt" a cat from the DSPCA cant really afford that at the moment which is a shame as I'd really liked to have rescued one
the fee is a bit off putting but i s'pose in the long term it works out ok with them being immunised and neutered

The Blue Cross (http://www.bluecross.ie/mobileclinic.html) will do a lot of that fairly cheaply. I think it'd work out cheaper than shelling out for the DSPCA version, but it's worth checking.
