I was reading a story about Cherie Blair in the Irish Post this week and she stated that her children all have irish passports ! I knew Tony Blair's mum was from Donegal, but it also said he never took up the option of a passport. Knowing that these forums are full of eligibilty experts, I wondered how this worked please enlighten.

Technically Blair could regsiter under the FBR (Foreign Birth Registrar) and claim his Irish citizenship. His kids could then do likewise, and then apply for passports

The department of Foreign Affairs should give you the info (under citizenship) www.dfa.ie

They do have Irish Passports. She stated that on the first Ryan Tubridy Late Late show but in his nervousness he missed out on quizing her on it. AFAIK, using the grandparent rule you can apply for an Irish passport and that is what they did for their kids. Think it was part of the protection of them so that people wouldnt twig who they were if they were travelling with Irish rather than British passports and Tony is quiet proud of his Irish roots. I remember some years ago my cousin in America's son was over staying with us for a while and he applied for his Irish passport on strenght of his grandad being born here. He had to provide his grandads birth cert, marriage cert of his grandparents, his dads birth cert and his own but he got it.

Thanks Magic, and Dodge I thought Tony would have had to have taken out Irish Citizenahip ( as Dodge said) for the kids to have

qualified, but maybe that's not the case. Anyhow, obviously this would have caused ructions politically, but

interesting none the less.

No my cousin only has his american passport but his son got an Irish one. They may have changed rules but after he was made prove it with all the documents he was able to get one.
