Anyone here into copying DVD's? (for personal use obviously). I'm after buying The Sopranos series 1 & 2, and am buying series 3 & 4 fairly soon. I'm also after Southpark, series 1 to series 7, but i'm fcuked if i'm paying for legitimately as i'm broke (student) after paying €80 a pop for the Sopranos. Can anyone copy Southpark? I'll do a swap or whatever!

Well if he buys them he can back them up, thats legit isnt it?

Ive got a DVD burner but cant rip films onto the hard disk coz of copyright protection. Does anyone know some software I can get (pref for free) that will let me get around this?

Had to do a report in college about this, any copying that breaks the enctyption on DVD's is illegal - it's called CSS (Content Secuity System, I think) - there are some programs out there that will copy and burn a DVD for you, takes about a day in all to rip and burn a single DVD.

THere's one that was recently banned in the states call DVD X-Copy, try searching around on astalavista.box.sk or any other warez sites and you should find it, there's one called 120% Alcohol - http://www.alcohol-software.com/ - which does the job nicely as well.

Search around on some forums as well, I think I heard of one that allows you to copy the extras on a DVD as well, and remove things like commentary or other language tracks.

As has been pointed out, copying a copyright-protected DVD is illegal. The thread starters definition of "personal use" is incorrect also -- "personal use" or "fair use" refers to copying your own copyright-protected material for backup (as Troy suggests) or alternative usage, such as another CD for the car, or MP3's for your MP3 player. Moreover, "fair use" has never really been tested in law in Ireland to the best of my knowledge.

Thread locked. 4tothefloor, your comment "i'm fcuked if i'm paying for legitimately as i'm broke (student)" makes it pretty clear to me that you know exactly what you were asking for. Your status as a student has no bearing, you choose your own paths in life. Don't do it again please. Consider yourself on warning number one.

4tothefloor has contacted me about this privately. I accept that it's possible they may have misunderstood the definition of fair use, so I'm retracting the warning given above. For the record:

a basic tenet of copyright law: Entitlement is tied to the original. Yes, you're entitled to make a copy for backup purposes or alternative use[1], but you may only use the backup/alternative while you own the original.

The showstopper in your post is when you said: "Can anyone copy Southpark? I'll do a swap or whatever!" You can't, and neither can they. If someone copies it and sends you the copy, they're breaking copyright law because you have no entitlement to the copy. If they copy it and send you the original, they're breaking copyright law because now they have no entitlement to the copy.

Sure, you could argue that that's their problem, but that's why I locked the thread -- not to restrict right to reply but to negate the possibility of someone opening themselves, you or particularly me up to legal liability created by copyright infringement or encouragement to infringe.

[1]Although again, I don't think this has been tested in Irish law, so it's possible you're not really entitled to do even that.
