I have old school wire broadband in the house but we have a couple of laptops now and I want to get a wireless router. So, can i buy one and swap my current modem for it or I do I need to contact my provider?

What kind of broadband is it? Wireless routers with a bundled DSL modem are ten a penny, but cable modems are a bit trickier afaik. Not that that should stop you, it's just easier and cheaper to run one device.

We have cable broadband. Bought a netgear router and it works fine. Cable still connects to modem, which then connects to router (and seperately to PC). When buying it, the fact it was for cable broadband was clearly marked on box

I'm talking about an all-in-one Dodge. It makes for neater networking that's easier to debug, and uses less power than two units.
