Triplets that played for the Republic of Ireland Under 16's

Hi,

Just wondering does anyone remember a set of triplets playing for Ireland at underage level? The only tentative bits of information that I have are that it may have been under 16s and it may have been some time in the 1990's.

They're not triplets but perhaps you're thinking of the Quinn brothers? I don't believe they would have ever all played on the same team at the same time though, too much of a gap in age.

The Farrally brothers from Kilbarrack all went to QPR then a couple ended up playing for Kilmount in Kilbarrack

Gallens decision was down to a degree of sectarian abuse/bullying from Alan McDonald, the nordie centre back with QPR when he was breaking through. Admittedly it was allowed by Francis but Gallens decision not to play for us was McDonalds fault. This came from a friend of mine who is related to the Gallens.

Thanks SkStu, that clears that up. Kevin Gallen was always really crestfallen that he didn't play for Ireland from what I heard from others. There was talk at the time that it was Francis talked him into it because of the new rules coming in about European football requiring a minimum number of English players on an English team, but this has a ring of truth about it.

My brother used to meet him occasionally in London around the gah scene, he was a strange fella - into his gah (doing linesman in one game my brother was playing), but never wanted to talk about football or ireland - maybe he has his own personal reasons

As a lifelong QPR fan this is something that has always gotten to me. Its simple, he says it himself: He wanted to play for Ireland, but when he was young he was forced into declaring for England by means of a professional contract by the then manager of QPR, Gerry Francis.

English fans don’t believe this, I know, we have spoken about it a million times. They say that he played for the England schoolboys (U-18) before he played U-21 so his declaration was clear from the outset. Of course he played for the England schoolboys, he was 17 when he signed the aforementioned contract.

Kevins main love is QPR. That’s why he signed that dreaded contract, he would do anything for QPR, even if it meant playing internationally for England.

We need to put this to bed now.

Yes indeed. And three brothers called Farrelly did play for Ireland and they were on the books of QPR. Chris Farrelly was a goalkeeper. Don't have the first names of the other two though. Thanks everyone for the help.

Hey DD - i was told this by a cousin of his. Im still in touch with him and he is a genuine fella. He told me that a good few years ago and I dont think he made it up to be honest. Reading Gallens interview above, it may have been a combination of both his love for QPR and MacDonald's "influence" (he was QPRs captain at the time im pretty sure) as that would probably make more sense.

He could have followed his brothers but choose not to.

Hmmm..........not sure I can agree with that :)

I think that at 17 years of age other things are on your mind. Not everyone at that age is thinking down the line
