Sligo Inter-Cultural Futsal League
SLIGO ROVERS WIN INAUGURAL FUTSAL LEAGUE
Sligo Rovers won the inaugural Sligo Inter-Cultural Futsal League as they defeated the Sligo Immigrant Workers Association 7-6 thanks to a golden goal from Darragh Healy. That game was the last of the evening last Wednesday in the Ursuline College in what was also the last round of league matches. The first game of the night saw a side from Globe House taking on the other side from the Sligo Immigrant Workers Association. In what proved to be an entertaining game it was the side from the SIO that won 7-5.
The second game of the night saw Sligo Rovers Young Guns taking on the team from Globe House who fared much better in their second game of the night as they ran out 7-3 winners. Kieran Brick scored two of the goals for Rovers Young Guns with Mark McGoldrick scoring the other but they were never able to get themselves into the game as they were given a lesson in Futsal by the lads from Globe House. Those games set the stage for the league decider between the only two unbeaten sides in the League Sligo Rovers 1 and the other side from the Sligo Immigrant Workers Association.
This was always expected to be a close game and in the end it proved to be although at one stage it looked like the team from the SIO were going to run away with it. They started brilliantly and raced into a 3-0 lead but Rovers pulled them back thanks to goals from Shane Brannigan and Nilos Ramos to leave them trailing 3-2 at half-time. SIO came out all guns blazing in the second half and opened up a 6-2 lead. However bit by bit Rovers began to peg them back and drew level just before full time thanks to two goals from Healy and another from Brannigan with Gavin O’Dwyer getting the equaliser.
That meant to decide the league a golden goal period was played and a defensive mix-up in the opening couple of minutes led to Healy scoring the winner to give Rovers the league title. They will be presented with the League trophy and winners medals at half-time of the Sligo Rovers match against Cliftonville. The Futsal League will begin again in a couple of months and it is hoped that more teams will take part.
Results:
Sligo Immigrant Workers Association 2 7-5 Globe House 1
Sligo Rovers Young Guns 3-7 Globe House 1
Sligo Rovers 1 7-6 Sligo Immigrant Workers Association 1
