A few nice cafes (v expensive by Armenian standards, still less than a pint in Dublin) around Republic Square in Yerevan, which is about a 20-30 minute walk from the stadium. There's a lovely park area with fountains, greenery etc. about 5 mins walk from Republic Square with outdoor bars and cafes. Great spot for sitting in the shade watching the world go past over a few beers.

The local beer is excellent, no need to drink imported stuff, its way better than the muck we drink. From memory there are three main local brews, Kotayk, Erebuni and Kilikia. I preferred them in that order, the Kotayk was fantastic.

The only warning is the usual Eastern Europe (south eastern Europe?) one about strip clubs and dodgy "nightclubs". They are all mafia run and you will be parted with any money you have and any more they can get from you in short order.

All in all Yerevan is an interesting city, some really great sights mixed with the usual Communist era architecture and new developments, I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Weather should also be good.

Any decent bars in Yerevan with a big screen? I'm not flying home until Sunday, Saturday I hope to spend sightseeing, followed by a night of eating and drinknig. As Armenia is 4 hours ahead, matches kicking off at 3pm and 7pm GMT will be on in Yerevan at 7pm and 11pm local time.

From reading reviews on other sites it doesn't seem to be the best place for drunk football fans to be socialising.

Saw some reviews on Virtualtourist about fellas getting ripped off in bars and strip clubs. Maybe it isn't that bad, I'll probably go myself anyway.

The bars should be fine, I would worry about going to "nightclubs" as this term means something else in the ex-USSR. There are quite a lot of bars and cafes which sell beer just south of the theater (which is the sort-of main building in the center of town), also to the north of the city there is a hill with an amusment park there are some bars there. There is a good wild west pub on Tumanyan street, which does nice bowls of cooked crayfish (like giant prawns) which are a delicacy there, it also did burgers for those of you who are less adventuristically inclined. Over to the west of the city, not too far from the stadium, there is a street with Khoverats (BBQ) restaurants a lot of these serve beer too. Also you can buy beer in supermarkets and drink it in the parks etc, its pretty common.

From reading reviews on other sites it doesn't seem to be the best place for drunk football fans to be socialising.You WILL get ripped off if you are hammered and wander into a "nightclub" or similar and the police won't tolerate excessive drunkeness if it gets very messy. But thats the case in a lot of the world.

We had no trouble when we were there with Derry City, other than the special police taking a dim view of a midnight footy game in the middle of Republic Square, and in that case all they did was move us along :)
