Fighting relegation in the first division(not old) and PL is completely different.

What about Charlie Adam in the 2010-11 season?

Even if you go with the argument that the standards are different, it doesn't hold up. The standard, say, of the League of Ireland didn't stop James McClean from impressing people and earning a move to Sunderland, for example.

And, sure Darron Gibson played for Man United, but he has 'looked' much better at Everton.

There is an exception to every rule DI, and thats a fair example. But has he really done an awful lot for liverpool? Definitely a PL player though.

Its not to do with standards though, I think its just a general attitude towards the First division in England, and I imagine its not an elitist one, rather based on merit.

I do actually believe that the LOI is probably a better recruiting ground at the minute than the First Division, because lots of managers have become aware of the bargains to be had here, and are actively scouting talent here. Its not seen as a loss, more of an investment to pay between 100-350k for a young prospect from the LOI, than it is in a mid 20s for 1+ mil in the First division. It makes business sense, as much as a footballing one.

Yes certainly, bargain is more likely to be had in the LOI simply because there will be less scouts watching,
didn't the ex-Reading manager pick up Doyle Hunt and Long from Cork City, Doyle cost £78,000, Long
probably less?
That is a good bit of business considering what you could get for them now, probably around 50+ times
the initial outlay!!

Stephen Hunt came from Brentford I think, Noel Hunt from Dundee United having played for Shamrock Rovers.

Doyle's transfer fee was set by a release clause in his contract

Looks like Cunningham's made an impression for Bristol City. Playing at a similar level to Ward and St. Ledger, and any time I've seen him play for the U-21s, he's been excellent. Also looked quite assured against Algeria and Norway. A left-footed left-back with no obvious weaknesses, a good schooling in the game from Man City, having trained alongside world-class players for much of the last couple of years. 6' tall too, so not lacking in physical presence. With Ward being generally awful positionally, Wilson not being a natural left-back, Harte 34 years of age and a liability even in his prime, and with Clark, O'Shea and Kelly uncomfortable at left-back, I'm officially on the 'Cunningham for Ireland' bandwagon. Would be very happy if he gets called up today, unlikely as it may be.

Even if he's not totally ready yet, at least he's young, with room for improvement, unlike some other options.

I think he'd have been given a go in Serbia had it not been for the U21 game, so in a way he's kind of a victim of his own success at that level. I think he'd be well worth a go in the next friendly since we know what Ward can do. I'd prefer Cunningham to be given a run than Wilson for sure.

Did great for the 4th goal won a good challenge in his half and slid a gibsonesque pass through for the forward.

Stretchered off after a dangerous challenge tonight as the toys start to come out of the Peterborough pram by the sounds of it. Nul Point indeed.

Hope he gets back playing soon.... the possibility of Cunningham and Coleman as our future fullbacks bombing down the wing helps me sleep at night;)

All of our young players have to have a somewhat serious injury at some point. Mandatory.

It's his second serious injury.
At least it happened due to a tackle and not a Keith O'Neill type, tripping over a blade of grass.

Back on the bench for Bristol City today at home to Derby. Mark O'Brien makes his first start of the season for Derby along with Hendrick.

Scored what I think is his first senior goal to put Bristol City 1-0 up at home to Watford tonight. It's now 2-0.

On internet rumour boards, Cunninghasm is being linked with Wigan, which would be a good move up to the Championship and would let Derrick Williams play at left back possibly.

Saw he was only on the bench for Bristol City at the weekend. Might be coming back from an injury but not sure. I had high hopes for him a few seasons ago :(

No harm in that move at all. Moving to another Championship side where he'll get more games than at Bristol City, I suspect. Ideal, it seems to me anyway.

Insanity on Bristol City's part to sell him, even before Joe Bryan's injury.

Fantastic news. I opened the thread thinking he was injured.

samhaydenjr
02/05/2016, 3:12 AM
Good news - do we take him to the Euros on the basis of this renaissance in his career and a desire to avoid having to use Robbie Brady as a makeshift left-back or has he been out of the team for too long to justify putting him in at a major tournament?

SkStu
02/05/2016, 4:09 AM
It would be very difficult to justify taking him. He hasn't featured at all is the primary reason and he's a specialist position in an area that we are likely to have a starter (Brady) and coverage (Clark/Wilson). Most definitely should (re)blood him for the WC qualifiers though.

Have to say there is a nice block of players on the verge of breaking through for us - Cunningham, Byrne, Judge, Hayes, Duffy. All shining at a very decent level.

Being linked with Aston Villa today. Not sure what to make of that move, to be honest. Villa are a much bigger club but maybe a bigger basketcase of a club in recent times. Di Matteo could be a good appointment for them or he could be utterly atrocious. You'd forget that he got promoted with WBA that time and wasn't too far off with MK Dons but Villa has been a tough place managers over the past few years.

He's got a year left on his contract and I don't think PNE are flush with cash so a decent bid and the deal could be struck, if Cunningham is willing.

Are you Eamonn Dunphy is disguise?

To be fair to Dunphy he nails his colours to the mast, before later backtracking shamelessly.

He doesn't backtrack shamelessly, he just says it like he has genuinely forgot, or like he never said it at all.

Interesting that Cunningham and Ryan Manning, who played on opposing teams in last weekend's game between Preston and QPR, were next-door neighbours growing up and used to have back-garden kickabouts together: https://twitter.com/Cunningham_17/status/835623759709089792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
