I think we should select a large squad as we dont have many friendlies lined up and it would be handy as the game is in England.

No point in putting together a full team. I'd like to see some new things, like Stephen Ward given a go at left back. It would be nice to see Steven Reid back in at central midfield. Simon Cox should definitely be capped too at some stage, even as a sub.

True I would like some "flair" in midfield
I think Wes Holihan has think class for Norwich ( Low league I know but still )
Like to see new blood tried out in that area.

I honestly cant see any of the old England U-21 players being capped.
Yes to Cox and McCarthy though

This should be on Traps TO DO list for the spring international
Play Stephen Ward at left full
Integrate McCarthy, Garvan, Cox and McCann to Senior squad
Give Keogh, if fit, a run up front
Give more game time to Westwood, Foley, Gibson, Best and St Ledger against top class opposition like Argentina and Brazil

Are we even sure that Cox will get a call up?
Its a pity there is no ITK (in the know) people on this board that would know this kinda things

It would be nice to see McCarthy get rewarded with a call up.
Foley and Ward should be tried out in the 2 full back positions and then give Coleman a run at some stage.
Westwood should definitely get at least a half.
You'd have to play Dunne, Duff and Keane for a bit of experience and stability.
I don't think the likes of Ambrose, O'Hara and Cox will get a call up to be honest, but with so many players available to us playing at a high level, a B international would be of great benefit to us come the end of the season!!!

I tuned into the Newcastle and West Brom game on monday night to have a look at Cox and he was on the bench. Was that from injury or form?

Form hasn't scored in 5 games, was getting subbed on the 60/70th min mark in all those.

No bull**** filling it with teenagers, reserves and championship players please.
left back is an area we need to look at so bringing in ward for a chance would be important, as would bringing back Andy Reid and giving him a much deserved chance.
Otherwise same old squad with the team picked based on form.

No point in making changes for the sake of it.
For me it should be the same old squad, with Ward and Cox called up, and maybe it's also time to have James McCarthy train with the squad. Steven Reid will be back, though it's possible Blackburn won't risk him and Finnan should be back.
I think Stokes might just deserve being included. I'd love to see Garvan or Fahey given a call up, but most of all I'd like to see Andy Reid back, though I'm not sure he's even fit.
I think Liam Lawrence is virtually a new player for us and a great addition, and the two lads in CM in Paris put in such a good showing that maybe CM isn't as much a weakness as I had thought. I still think we'd have kept France scoreless if JOS hadn't gone off. Finnan is the outstanding candidate to fill in (or even start) at RB but maybe it's time to give Foley a run at some stage. Carr has been the league's best RB all season in my opinion, along with Sagna (boooo) but he's not in the mix.

Ward is the obvious player to call up as he's a Premiership regular in a position that has been a problem area for us for many a year. Also agree with Foley getting a run at RB - although his inclusion isn't that pressing as we do have a relatively high number of good options for right full.
Cox isn't a player I'd call up to the squad and not at the expense of Stokes who seems to be getting his act together and is still very much a player for the future. If I was to drop a striker it would be Long or Folan in preference for Clinton Morrison.
I'd be happy if the squad picked for the game looks at our options at left full and centre midfield/ and possibly centre half. Otherwise same squad as what we are used to.

The thing is, apres Paris, Whelan, Andrews and Lawrence haven't been club regulars for one reason or another. McCarthy could well jump ahead of Gibson/Miller and be in contention for a first team spot/subs bench next September. He has been an early starter, his football career kicking off as he reaches the age of 21 is within reason.

...most of all I'd like to see Andy Reid back, though I'm not sure he's even fit...
I'm not sure he has ever been fit, but I'd call him up like a shot. A point was made by someone on here (probably yourself) that it would have been poor form of Trapp to have put the Reids into the France game, that it would be like sh!tting on the lads who got them there at the first sign of a big game: it was very nearly rewarded if that was the thinking.
However, this is the start of a new season internationally (for us anyway) - time to roll out Andy!

The vast majority of the squad from last campaign will still be the same for the euro qualifiers so I just want to see maybe 3 or 4 new additions to the squad for this game.Maybe over the course of next few months we will be playing some B internationals or games against weaker opposition but we should not turn this game into a glorified B game by capping half the under 21 squad and a few other championship players

I think Wilson deserves a start, possibly at full back with John O'Shea definetely ruled out.

Yes lets not experiment and blood players in a meaningless friendly...lets pick the same team as the last campaign and sure lets keep picking them forever and we'll never have to cap or experiment with any of the young up and coming talented players we have..maybe we could call up Quinn,Mc Grath and Ronnie Whelan for a bit more experience because sticking with the old and not progressing is the way foward in football:rolleyes:

Agreed and in saying that there are also a good few others who have been constantly picked in the squad that
shouldn't be within an ass's roar of International football for Ireland.

I guess Emmet thinks that Paul McShane isn't good enough for the squad on footballing grounds alone, which is fair enough I suppose

I doubt Duffy would be picked without publically declaring his interest first.
Even more unlikely he'd be picked without breaking into the team.

I'd like to see a full team, with Ward at left back instead of Kilbane. Given that O'Shea is done for the season, put Finnan back in there.
Given
Finnan-Dunne-St.Ledger-Ward
Lawrence-Whelan-Andrews-Duff
Keane-Doyle
Throw some subs on at half-time, like Coleman, S. Reid, etc.

I can't see Finnan being back. It's not fair to set your stall out for the campaign with him at right back only to have to get someone else in from the 2nd game on. If Trap leaves him out then that will be the matter put to bed.
He's been a great servant, but not one for the future.

Coleman is 21 so hes not too young.Foley is playing Premiership football so has at least as much of a claim as Ward has for selection. Im not claiming we have any outstanding candidate for right back at the moment because we are lacking in experience there but Finnan more than likely wont be around for all of the next campaign so I just think we need to look at other options there

Stephen Kelly and Paul McShane have been the replacement right-backs of choice during the last campaign. Whatever we think of both players I really don't see Trapattoni making wholesale changes other than broadening the squad with the likes of Coleman, Foley etc. He will test out some players during friendly matches but I don't expect to see a dramatically different squad when the qualifiers start in September.

I think Ward is worth a look at as we're weak at LB. I don't think the others merit attention, Steven Reid is obviously good enough and we know what he can do and no point in risking injury in a meaningless game. Meyler is getting more starts than Reid right now

Ward is the only one I'd put money on if I had to. Hard to know with Trapp
I do think there's gonna be one out of left field though, a Granny rule recruit. Based on nothing more than a hunch and the idle speculation on the other threads...

I would pick a big squad, allowing the first choice guys to be there with young players, and to get a look at as many as possible before the next campaign
Given, Westwood, Murphy, Kelly, Foley, O'Shea, Dunne, O'Dea, St. Ledger, Ward, Kilbane, McGeady, Lawrence, Gibson, McCarthy, Andrews, Miller, Fahey, Reid, Reid, Whelan, Hunt, Duff, Folan, Keane, Doyle, Stokes, Sheridan, McGoldrick.
Would start with
---------------Given------------
Finnan Dunne(c) O'Dea Ward
Lawrence McCarthy Andrews Duff
-----------Doyle Stokes--------
Is there a limit on subs?
Assuming no then Keane on for Doyler at half time, and Foley and Kilbane on for Finnan and Andrews soon after. Then get on the youngsters for the last 20 minutes as the chance presents itself.

Not much other than that he's been doing well for Forest from what I read, and they are flying high at the top of Division 2. Worth a look in a friendly I think.

He offers a real physical presence up front, in my opinion he has the potential to be a similar kind of player to Niall Quinn. I'm not saying he should be in a squad for a qualifier, but from what i saw of him when he got a chance at Celtic he looked good in a good team. Its always going to be harder to impress at St. Johnstone, but I think its worth having a look at him train with the likes of Keane and Doyle. If nothing else it will give him a boost, and it would be great for us in the next decade if he develops into an international class player.
