The JJB Sports Irish Cup match between Newry City and Larne was abandoned after serious fighting between players and coaching staff late in the game.

Punches and kicks were traded in the Newry dugout and across the pitch after two Larne players and Larne manager Paul Millar had been sent-off.

Newry were leading 2-1 before referee Raymond Crangle and his assistants walked off the pitch after 82 minutes.

Crangle will now submit a report to the Irish Football Association.

Liam Hogan was sent-off for raising his hands to Newry player Darren King and then Alan Reid was dismissed for a challenge on King soon after.

Larne boss Millar was sent from the dugout and then substitutes, players and coaching staff from both sides became embroiled in trading punches and kicks all over the pitch.

BBC Radio Ulster pundit Alan Patterson described the trouble as "the worst scenes I have ever seen in 40 years of watching Irish League football".

Newry boss John McDonnell said the unsavoury events had "kicked off out of nothing".

"It is was not nice what happened - I tried to get my players off the pitch as quickly as possible," said McDonnell.

"We were cruising with seven or eight minutes to go and I'd like to be talking about a cup win but instead we have to wait on the referee's report."

That kick to the head should see a seriously lengthy ban.
Disgraceful

Mad images there.
Was listening to it on the radio, there wasn't much going on it the match, didn't seem nasty or anything. Seemed to kick off from nothing.

If you kicked someone in the head like that on the street, you'd be looking at jail time.

Dead right, disgraceful act. Saw the pictures in todays papers, more reminiscent of a Gaah match.

Larne's No 8 should get a life ban, outrageous behaviour could have broke opponent's neck with that kick.

Don't know who the number 8 is, but its a hugely cowardly thing to do. And he should be brought to court and face legal proceedings. In one of the pictures there is a boy of about 6 looking on. What impression will this make on his mind.

It's disgraceful behaviour on a football pitch. If it was on the street you would be guarnteed Larne's number 8 would be behind bars.

He was probably egging them on, if the average age of the 'hardmen' down here is anythin to go by.

If he gets anything less than a life ban we can kiss football goodbye, that is possibly the worst act I have ever seen on a football pitch. He should be made an example of by the law as well, just because it happens on a football pitch does not make it legal or socially acceptable.

From RTE:

Larne midfielder Anthony Lagan has been suspended by the club for his involvement in the violent scenes in the Irish Cup game at Newry City.

Anthony Lagan is currently leading a poll on the Larne FC website which names him as the club's Player of the Month for December. He holds 33% of the vote.
