You're not showing any bias there now, Brendy? :p ;)

For my two cents worth, I'd say U2.

Leaving out band which scored the first UK No 1 from an Irish band (and also the second)??

Maybe I'm biased, being a fan and all, but the Boomtown Rats have to be in there.

Featuring thrilling fuses of alternative pop/rock's most intensified marks, Snow Patrol's compositions combine songwriting aptitude with guitar rock's sharpest strains. Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Mark McClelland (bass, keyboards), and John Quinn (drums) embodied the Northern Irish three-piece that started off as a duo. Lightbody and McClelland first got together in Dundee, Scotland, where they were studying, prior to the addition of Quinn, who completed the lineup. - From Allmusic.com

Either the Undertones or Thin Lizzy. The next best are Stiff Little Fingers (U2 are just an imititation of SLF lol) and I'm surpised nobody has mentioned those Plastic Paddies the Pogues. Shane MacGowan is a genius.
