Interesting that one of the teams in the qualifying round is St Kevin's Boys. Could Tony Mac play one more game in Belfield?

(Answer - probably not, as he apparently went for cruciate knee surgery a few weeks ago)

What's the criteria for intermediate sides to qualify for the competition? It throws up the small possibility of UCD seniors v UCD inters cropping up at some point in the future.

Top four in the LSL Senior (top) division according to the Herald (http://www.herald.ie/sport/soccer/junior-senior/leinster-senior-cup-makes-a-return-1958977.html) so it won't be for a few years anyway.

Apparently the FAI are looking at changing the rules for the FAI Cup to not allow us in any more. The LSC is run by different people, but they may well follow suit in that event.

I wonder if we'll actually play the first team in this one as a kind of final pre-season match? You know you've been without football too long when you're really looking forward to the Leinster Senior Cup 1st round.

Bangor beat Tullamore 1-0, so we're away to Bangor. Report on the Tullamore website (http://www.tullamoretownfc.com/matchreports.htm).

Don't think it says where the game was played, although it does note that the game was "played on a narrow, bumpy pitch"

Tullamore are still pre-season as they're an A League side, so given how comfortably we got past Tullamore last year in the League Cup with our reserves, Bangor Celtic (in mid-season) don't appear a particular threat. But obviously that depends on what sort of team we put out.

Bangor played the game at home in Rathfarnham. One of the lads I work with joined them recently, although he hasn't played a game for them yet. They don't know where they'll play the game against ye yet.

Directions to the Iveagh Grounds here (http://www.soccer-ireland.com/dublin-football-clubs/st-james-gate-fc.htm). It appears to be a similar distance from the Goldenbridge LUAS stop as Richmond Park is.

As the crow flies it is but I don't think you can get in to the Iveagh Grounds from that side so the walk would be a bit longer.

Any Bookies pricing up the game? Fancy a few quid on Bangor if the odds are good, they're a very strong side and mid-season and after seeing Bohs struggle to beat Bluebell I fancy Bangor for the upset.

Bangor are mid-table in the LSL at the moment; seem to be having a poor enough season. But a lot depends obviously on the mid-season/pre-season bit, and how we approach the game. I'd say with the league starting next week, we'll be taking this as competitively as the LSC deserves. Haven't seen any odds, but I'd stay clear.

It would make sense to treat this as a first league game I think, get a look at how the first choice team will work. I assume we won't be able to make 11 subs at half time either so we probably won't have the usual friendly messing.

Ah I'm more than likely going to head to the game so if I could get a decent price I'd still chance a few euro on it.

It's their Saturday team that's mid table. Their Sunday team is 2nd with a game in hand, unbeaten and they've only conceded 8 goals in 14 games. I expect it to be very tight, wouldn't be surprised to see extra time.

pineapple stu
25/02/2010, 10:58 AM
Ah. That's a good point... They're unbeaten too.

I think of all clubs though, being in pre-season won't affect us. Most of our players have been playing colleges football the past while to keep sharp. But the different team does make it a more interesting tie!

Alot of our players played lastnight in the Colleges League final and the Collingwood is on Next week, so I think it will be a mix of regulars plus some of the younger players.

Bookies not giving a lot away, Bangor 11/5, draw 11/5 think UCD were evens. Might still put a few euro on Bangor for the interest.

EBS Metropolitan cup is the one as far as I can tell. They're in Intermediate Senior Sunday in the league and I think they were knocked out of the intermediate cup.

I put a massive €5 on Bangor anyway and if the weather doesn't turn to complete crap I'm going to head down to Crumlin later.

We won 2-1 after extra time. Kilduff scored in the second half and Rusk got the winner about 5 minutes from the end of extra time. The first half was quite scrappy but the second half was much better. Rusk and Ward did well but the centre midfield didn't really impose themselves on the game as much as you'd hope. Shane Fitzgerald came on in the second half so I assume he's signed as I doubt we could use triallists in a cup game.

The team was:
Brennan
Harding Shortall Boyle Nangle
Rusk Ward Bolger ????? Mulhall
Kilduff

Fallon and Fitzgerald came on for ????? and Mulhall.

????? is Barry McCabe. 1st year scholarship from G-G-G-Galway. Used to play for Salthill Devon, underage anyway at least. Was on the Irish schools team last season.

Quarter-final draw -

Bray Wanderers v Dundalk
Shamrock Rovers v Shelbourne
Bohemians v Sporting Fingal
UCD v St Patrick's Athletic or Drogheda United

No date fixed for that Pat's v Drogheda game as yet, but I think the aim was to get the quarters played this month. I think it's safe to say we've nothing to fear from Drogheda at home; be interesting to see how we get on against Pat's (although we're probably away to them in the league before this game).

Pete Mahon had been saying in the previews to the Pat's-Drogheda game on Monday (before it was called off) that he'd be making a fair few changes to the side. I imagine we'd do likewise.

We've drawn Bray or Dundalk away apparently.

Shels v Feckall in the other semi.

Hard to call any of those games without knowing what strength teams are going to be playing really.

Bray get through, so it's another trip to the Carlisle. Looks to me like the next free midweek for both clubs is the week starting the 28th of June, next one after that is the the week starting the 12th of July (we play Bray at home in the league that Friday).

A date for any pending FAI Ford Senior Cup, 3rd Replay(s) would also be needed.

I'm thrilled this competition is back on the Calendar and UCD are in the mix.

Are we now the biggest club in the competition given you've a First Division club, a club who were in the First Division club more recently than us and a club who didn't win the First Division?

Other than that, still meh.

If we get to be champions of Leinster, looking at the premier division, we only have to finish ahead of Sligo and Galway to be the best team in Ireland surely.
