'Fair Play' ranking could propel Galway into Euro action
EUROPEAN football could return to Galway for the first time in 19 years next July thanks to Galway United’s high finish in the FAI’s Fair Play League for 2009.

United finished joint third in the table alongside Drogheda United in a table that, just like the final Premier Division table, was topped by Bohemian FC with Shamrock Rovers finishing in second.

In its efforts to promote fair play, UEFA award three extra places in the first qualifying round of the Europa League to the domestic Fair Play winners from the top three Associations in the UEFA Fair Play League, which will be published in May 2010.

Should Ireland finish in the top three places of the UEFA Fair Play League, due to the fact that Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers will already represent the League of Ireland in UEFA competitions next year, the remaining place will go to the highest placed team in the Fair Play League.

As United and Drogheda finished tied for third in the Fair Play League on 1,093 points, a drawing of lots would have to take place to decide which team would advance to the Europa League if the League of Ireland finishes in the top three of UEFA’s Fair Play League.

It's all national teams and all club teams participating in UEFA Competitions [so underage too].
Not sure if the Domestic League/Setanta Cup falls under 'UEFA competition' tbh.

There's been a bit of talk centered around Ireland, FIFA and fair play recently, just in case anyone missed it! Wouldn't be at all surprised to see an extra UEFA cup spot winging it's way over here, although the mess so many clubs seem to be in at the moment might not necessarily make it a good thing.

hopefully, as I believe the more teams/clubs get a chance of European football the better for the League. I would imagine that a euro tie would generate a decent level of interest in Galway.

Nope, it includes attacking play (screwed there), respect for match officials (em) and general overall fair play, not just reds and yellows.

Ranking
All representative teams from a football association are responsible for the score of the fair play ranking of that association. This includes match of all national teams and all clubs in all UEFA competitions. The ranking is composed from June 1 until May 31 the next year. The criteria for the ranking is of course Fair Play.

Criteria
Teams are judged on the following criteria:

Yellow and Red cards: If no cards are shown the score will be 10. Every yellow card will deduct this total by 1. A red card will cost a team 3 points in the ranking. If the red card is the result of a second yellow card the deductions of the second yellow card will be ignored. But if a player gets a direct red card after he got a yellow card earlier, the yellow card will be counted as a deduction. This score could become negative.

Positive play: For positive play a team can score a maximum of 10 point and a minimum of 1 point.

Respect to the opponent: e.g. returning the ball to the opponent at a throw-in: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

Respect to the referee: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

Behaviour of the team officials: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

Behaviour of the fans: maximum of 5 point and a minimum of 1 point
NB: this criterion is ignored when the number of fans is negligible e.g. if there are no fans at all or because of penalty that was given by the UEFA.

The total number of points will be divided by the maximum number of points (40 or 35) and multiplied by 10 which will result in a score between 0 and 10.

There's usually some kind of interim fair play table announced towards the end of January. I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Ireland have never been awarded a place in Europe for fair play so I wouldn't hold my breath if I was a Galway fan, plus the fact we're not exactly on good terms with the ruling bodies won't help matters :mad:.

If by some miracle chance that the place is offered to a loi club there will be a draw to see who gets it between Drogheda united and galway :eek: That would be interesting to say the least .Couldnt see us taking it even if we where offered it tbh . To expensive and we cant play the games in Drogheda unfortunately :(

To expensive and we cant play the games in Drogheda unfortunately :(The fair play teams get in a few rounds into the competitions as far as I know, they used to anyway, so there'd be a good chance of drawing a reasonably big team so it would probably be worth taking the place if it did come up.
