Sweet as a nut! That was the most satisfying 80 minutes of rugby that I have ever seen. O'Gara was unbelievable, he gave a masterclass in kicking, as were O'Kelly, O'Connell, Darcy, Foley and Byrne. Its wide open now, we'll probably win the triple crown, and hopefully the Welsh will upset the French tomorrow and give us a chance of the championship.

Don't s'pose Mr. Olympics man from the bus was in there last night, Sylvo? Watched it but expected we'd f*ck it up in the last minute. Expecting the mandatory 10 mins injury time. Then after the initial screaming from Conchita and me had died down rang up the few English mates we still have left. Also left a message of comiserations to my work colleagues.:D

As for Johnny W, he wouldn't have made a difference IMO. Ireland hardly conceded a penalty in the second half while Larry Grayson kicked all his throughout the game. I think England missed Martin Johnson more. Forget the championship: France would batter that England side. Still Triple crown's a consolation: Does it mean anything anymore?

Spare a thought for Matt Dawson. He's taking his Irish mother-in-law to lunch today.

Can anyone remember the last time we beat the World Champions of a sport, in a competive game, on their own ground? One of the greatest days it is then!

Feckin class result! Definately up there with some great Irish sporting moments. Beating the world champions at Twickenham, probably stopping them from winning the 6 Nations. Cracker altogether hi! :D

Triple Crown here we come!

I disagree. Yesterday was one of the greatest days in the history of Irish sport period. After football, rugby is our next most popular international sport. That doesn't seem like a minority to me.

And even if it was a minority sport it wouldn't matter because the achievement of beating the best team in the world in their own backyard in any sport is an amazing achievement.

Exactly. Can't say I thought we'd win before the game; as stated thought we'd lose to a try in the final minutes; and did say that I don't think that Ireland will win the 6 Nations. But still I reckon that the result is highly signficant and not just because it was against England. As for a minority sport, this is the case worldwide, but I wouldn't say it is in Ireland. I still reckon rugby's played by, and certainly watched by, more people in Ireland than basketball, which is a far more popular and professional sport across the world than rugby.

Rugby is a minority sport in this country. The national league attracts 3 men and a dog to games, and is such a joke, that it has been virtually scrapped.
The European Cup is made up of "fake" Irish provinces, and with the backing of all the ex-feepaying college boys in RTE, has been hyped out of all proportion to it's following.
"Munster" may get a big crowd when they are winning, but it's easy to get a crowd drawn from a population of about a million, for about 10 games a year.
But I suppose you should enjoy your day in the sun, they don't come around very often, do they?

My definition of a 'sport' is where all the protagonists are willing participants. If you're going to classify Horse Racing as a 'sport' you may as well include bullfighting, bear baiting or that fiesta in Spain where the donkey gets f*cked out of the first floor window.

Bullfighting is a sport. It's the national sport of Spain. Sure, it has its gorey moments, but it's a very proud tradition for them, with stars and leagues and rankings.
Not for the Spaniards it isn't hombre. It's classed as an 'espectáculo'. You'll find all the details of yet another day without a horn going up the culo of a matador in the 'arts' section of a newspaper, next to how the opening night of 'When Harry Met Sally' passed. You also won't find out how many bulls El Stupido and his amigos have finished off in Marca or AS, either.

Never been to a corrida myself (neither has my mother - who hates the spectacle - or any of my family) and I can't say it's on my 50 things to do before I die. Galicians (along with Catalans and those from the Canaries. Surprisingly it's still sufficiently popular in the Basque country) seem to be a bit indifferent to bullfighting. La Coruna's old bullring was turned into an indoor arena many years ago, hosting circuses and concerts, although with tourism from Madrid strong in July and August, it still has one corrida for the week when most of Spain goes on holiday, and no doubt to placate any old Falangistas with influence left in La Coruna. Apparently they held one at the Crystal Palace exhibition in the late 19th Century. Legend has it a riot kicked off after police decided to call off the corrida because of its cruelty. So I'd say, given the chance, it might even be popular in England too.

Anyway, I have a feeling NigeSausagepump may be right: We do all know 'what happens when you pair Irish teams and raging favouritism!' :( (My pessimism proved groundless last week, so that's what I'm counting on :D )

Davros. Stop pretending not be not English. It's nothing to be ashamed of really. Oh, and big Ally reminds you to stop reading the porn channel at 4 am.

Like my new friend Lopez, I've never been to a corrida. My dad and brother went to a couple when we lived in Spain (relatives visiting, and so on), but they admitted afterwards it was quite boring.

Actually it's going the other way - Scotland and Wales have gone to a provincial structure. More important to the Fench and English Unions that it's competitive...

Ya well he still is. Just that he can at least acknowledge he was wrong. Which is brave I suppose.

Brought O'Gara back into the team.
Saw sense from his shocking decision to drop Axel Foley.
Played the way he should have played last year and we get results.

Apparently bull fighting only a regional "sport" in Spain & mainly for the tourists. I've been told most spanish peoiple have never been to one.

Nice to see Sir Clive beaten on his home turf. He surprisingly modest loser whioch good to see I suppose.

Still the usual english gamesmanship during the game.
- O'Driscoll taken out of the play in first 5 minutes & should have been yellow card.
- Dawson kicked (offside) the ball out the back of the irish scrum in lead up to english try but missed by ref.
- Stringer tripped behind refs back by english player coming back from offside in build up to irish try.

O'Driscoll was dire even allowing for playing out of position. IRFU should let him off abroad for a few years to give young players a chance at a provincial game.
Dempsey ran the ball a few times & must have stunned England.
Aside from early bad penalty miss O'Gara almost perfect & seems to be benefiting from sustained 1st team place.
Amazing now that O'Sullivan actually took Paddy Wallace (who?) to the World Cup instead of D'Arcy.

Dunno what that means, but would hazard a guess that WWF (or WWE or whatever they call it now) would be covered by the word 'espectaculo'...

Haven't seen the Sanish version of bullfighting, but watched the French version on telly and it looks pretty impressive. Lots of pomp and ceremony...and nothing wrong with a little pomposity every now and again!! Would like to go to see one. Think there's a corrida in Barca near the Sagrda Familia (or it can be seen from it, but then again so can lots of the city), but it's only on one or two days a week in the summer.
Well I think WWE is more cruel to the viewer, but yes that would be a good comparison. :D

As you probably guessed, I'm a bit anti-corrida myself. Probably only thing I hate about Spain, although at least 1. They're up front about it. and 2. The bullfighter takes a bit of a risk going into the ring with a bull, even a stupid one (those that go for the man instead of the cape have long been sent through a McDonald's mincer) by Taurine standards and is either drugged or had his horns shaved or more than likely both.

Ah I think what I said was fair;

"SHANE Byrne is just a Blackrock boy who let a mullet get in the way of a rugby career, in the past he's had serious trouble finding his man in the line-out but he seems to have sorted it for now."

And credit to him his throwing for Ireland has been excellent. His form for Leinster wasnt the greatest tho.

As for the rest of that thread Eddie O'Sullivan stole my game plan and selection!

Perhaps tourism doesn't keep it alive, but it is a key factor on the coast. Seeing people from societies which look down on the practice of killing animals for halal meat, sustaining this 'economy' does make me wince. I think you're right about most Spaniards not going to corridas. Most are indifferent, but I read that Vigo's revamping of its bullring has been continually held up by demonstrators, so much that the city has been without a bullfight for some years. When I was in Bilbao last June, students were handing out leaflets about a demonstration called for outside the bullring against the practice. However both Madrid and Alicante have had big demonstrations too, and this is the heartland of the sport. I can see it become as much a controversy in years to come as foxhunting is here.
