The Football Association of Ireland have announced the final Fair Play League final placing for 2009. League of Ireland, Premier Division champions, Bohemians scooped the Premier Division award while Shamrock Rovers finished as runners-up. In the League of Ireland 1st Division, U.C.D finished on top of the Fair Play League with Galway’s Mervue United finishing in second place.

The respective divisional winners will each receive prize money of €4,500 with the respective runners-up receiving prize money of €2,000.

In its efforts to promote fair play, UEFA award three extra places in the 1st qualifying round of the Europa League to the domestic Fair Play winners from the top three Associations in the UEFA Fair Play League which will be published in May 2010.

Should Ireland finish in the top three places of the UEFA Fair Play League, due to the fact that Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers will be already representing the League of Ireland in UEFA competitions next year; the remaining place will go to the highest placed team in the Fair Play League. As Drogheda United and Galway United finish tied for third in the Fair Play League on 1093 points, a drawing of lots would have to take place to decide which team would advance to the Europa League, 1st qualifying round.

Not quite sure how this system works, there were hardly eight teams in the first division with worse disciplinary records than Dundalk?

Ya there was no way 8 teams worse than Dundalk. The first division had a low enough red card count anyway i would say.

What are the chances of Ireland being in the top three?

As far as I know there are extra points for premier.

Extra points for extra games? Premier had 3 more games.

Though that wouldn't be fair on leagues with fewer games (in terms of Europa qualification) unless an average is calculated regardless of number of games played.

dundalk alone probably screwed us out of the place anyway and pats aswell id assume. was there that many reds in the 1st? or just a raft of yellows?

Surprise surprise! Weird that Pats are so close!

Also Acronvilla, there prob was a raft of yellows in the first, I remember when we where there(oh yes those good old days) that about 6 players where booked a game!

Extra points for extra games? Premier had 3 more games.I think that's what it is. AFAIK there are points for all sorts of things, playing attacking football, fans being nice and a rake of other things, not just keeping your players on the pitch.

Though that wouldn't be fair on leagues with fewer games (in terms of Europa qualification) unless an average is calculated regardless of number of games played. The Europa League qualification is based on the 'fair play' of the international team I think.

E4,500 for the First Division winners. Not sure what Bohs get. Nice money! Didn't think we'd get it this year what with picking up five reds, of which four were straight.

I'm in shock that Derry came 6th despite apparently not being in the league this season according to official tables

I haven't got stats in front of me or anything but I wouldn't be surprised if we had players booked in virtually every game played this season. It would be hard to look through our squad and find someone who hadn't had a card issued to them this year. I was a bit shocked too, but I guess it all adds up...!

It was the Never Relgated banner that did Pats.

well worth it so...... ;)

we are sick of europe at this stage ;)
