Time to move on, who do we want in our group, I certainly want a 6 team group as it's an extra trip

My group would be
Croatia
Switzerland
Republic of Ireland
Macedonia
Lichenstein
Faroe Islands

My choices are based on revenge as im still bitter from Weds and couldnt stomach playing France again in the short term, Faroes are thrown in for having fog the last time and stopping me getting there:D

Would agree with you except swap Switzerland for Romania and Faroe Islands for San Marino, wouldn't fancy Faroe Islands with all of Brian Kerrs inside info available.

Second that. And Sweden, Hungary, Estonia & Luxembourg.

If those cnuts from UEFA/FIFA are reading, it's the very least you owe us.

And the first game in Paris. ;)

But knowing our luck it'll be Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro & Azerbaijan.

If it's the latter, we should lobby Iceland, Greenland, Canada & the US for a mid-Atlantic group in with the Inuits. We might finally find justice....

If we do get France, being top seeds they'll have all the clout at the fixtures meeting, and will get pretty much whatever they want. Would be nice to play them again in Paris first though.

How about a Yugoslavian group. What the odds of this happening?

Croatia

Serbia

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Macedonia

Considering the FIFA association is as corrupt as fianna fail I dont think we will get France - Platini and Blatter will not allow it..

(1/9) x (1/9) x (1/9) x (1/9) x (3/9), so 19,682-1 for that five-team group I think.

Let's merge all the five FAs into one- they couldn't fail to qualify even if there was a blind referee/ FIFA conspiracy/ fixed playoff with Slovenia.

Group most likely to qualify from -
Croatia
Romania
Wales
Liechtenstein
Andorra

Croatia are past it and struggled in their group this time -

On a seperate note - what is the qualification criteria?
I.e. is it the first 2 qualify for the first and then 2nd teams into a (fixed and seeded) playoff?

9 Group Winners
Best 2nd Placed team
Remaining 8 runners up to paly off for 4 places

Method for determining Best 2nd place team and play off draw at the discretion of Mr Platini:rolleyes:

Slightly wrong

Croatia will be drawn in one group (doesn't matter which)

Odds of Serbia joining them - 1/9

Odds of Bosnia joining them - 1/9

Odds of Slovenia OR Macedonia joining them - 2/9

Odds of Montenegro joining them - 1/9

Odds of not getting a sixth seed - 3/9

Total odds = 6/59049 or 1 in 9841..... half of what you said (not to be a dick or anything)

None taken, but if you read my post more carefully you'll see that I specified those five ex-Yugoslav teams, not any five of the six.

Countries in bold are relatively easily accessed by direct flights from dublin airport with aer lingus or ryanair (at least their capital cities or where they play their games)

1) lets fecking hope not

2) yes it would. sweden first choice out of the 2nd seeds, then romania, but for completely different reasons.

3) no to the return to Tallin, avoid all MEB countries if possible.

I think the Irish players do best when they are really up for it, such as against England, Italy and France.

It's hard to be up for it against a boring team like Germany.

From the fans point of view, some sunny countries would be ideal, ie Spain, Portugal, Greece.

Russia and colder countries like that would be a nightmare.

France again, the players would be really up for that game, and probably win both games, so bring 'em on. As long as we have a proper ref and video technology this time.

lol

we have players with a rubbish mentality then. all small countrys try hard against big teams, its not just an irish thing and in fact our record is pretty **** against big teams as well before that france match(which i count as a win)

The only team I want to draw is France.

I know Domenech will be sacked, Henry will have retired, but personally I have ghosts to exorcise with Paris in general, and I'm sure a few of the players do too. We were so close to having the greatest ever Irish away trip, I've no doubt that if we get them again our players will tear them apart.

(aside from that, avoiding Kerr's Faroes would be nice)

I doubt it.

I don't want

Cyprus not again please
Montenegro - way too good to be a 5th seed but great trip.
Slovenia way too good to be a 4th seed but would be a nice trip
Switzerland hardly ever play well against them.

I'd like

Croatia as top seed
Slovakia as 2nd seed - prob not as good
Wales as 4th seed
Liechtenstein as 5th seed.
no 6th seed and definitely not the faroes.

Great chance of best runner up if you get Liiechtenstein.

Wales in the same spot as Slovenia. Madness.

As an aside, if Slovenia hadn't played in the playoffs they'd have been third seeds. They are effectively being penalised for their success.

In calculating the best runner up - do all games count in a 5 team group? i.e. it is only the 6 team groups that have to discount the results against the bottom team?

Yes only the results of the 6th team from 6 team groups is discounted. Liechtenstein are by far the weakest 5th seeds so would be a fantastic draw.

That travel group isn't very travel friendly. We'd need a few neighbouring countries in central/Eastern Europe for that. Similiar to Latvia/Lithuania in WC'94, and Germany/Czech/Slovaks for the last Euros, and a 6-team group preferably.

Our last group was certainly not travel friendly, the closest visit pre-Georgian war was in Bari, Montenegro isn't great either, Cyprus is another long haul nightmare.

No Kazachstan please. There's a recession on.

If we are lucky enough to get a travel-friendly group, I hope the FAI negotiate double-header away weeks, and not the Home-Away-Home stuff that Kerr loved.

What's travel friendly got to do with it? They're five interesting places to visit. You sound like you'd be happiest with a group with England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the North.

Neighbouring contries also don't necessarily make a good group. Yes, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia would be fun, but very samey. Broaden your horizons, mypost.

The ease of travelling counts as much as the interest in different places.

I'm sure Tbilisi would have been very interesting, but who wants to go there under threat of war? Who wants to need visas for going to Bela/Russia, and Kazachstan?

Israel is a fascinating country too, but only a few went over when we played there. More might have gone if we had played them and Cyprus away in the same week, instead of 6 months apart.

Where did I mention anything about war?

I'm sorry if everything needs to be nice and easy for you, mypost. Lord knows, a visa is a tremendously difficult thing to get. As I said, broaden your mind.

(And as I recall, there were a few thousand in Israel)
