Man City's Irish winger, on loan at Chesterfield earlier in the season, linked with another loan move to Scunthorpe: http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Manchester-City-youngster-set-for-Scunthorpe-loan-deal-article219531.html

He played well at the Spireites, and at 20 he needs experience at a higher level. While he's been away, fellow academy graduate Vladimir Weiss has made the step up to the senior squad, and McDermott will probably compete with him for a spot on the bench by the end of the season.

Saw him play a few times for the U19s, can play out wide on the left, or through the middle. Very slight build, but lots of pace and has a fierce shot on him.

he's a meath man - and from the same place as me - hope he does well

Weiss is already a first pick on the Slovakian senior team and a world star in the making so I'd say its more likely he moves onto the Man city team than gets replaced on the bench.

McDermott is left sided, and Weiss is right sided AFAIK
They both played in the same academy side, so it could come down to what player in what position gets injured to see which of the two of them progress to the seniors.

All the more amazing then that he's been ignored by Goon Givens.

Contract cancelled. Back in Ireland. What a waste.

Not too many kind words from Howe there - he sounds annoyed if anything. Pity. The Manchester City academy hasn't served us too well in recent years.

Won't be missed by all accounts: http://www.afcb.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=62940&start=1

By all accounts on that reading they are sad to see him go to waste. Not the sort of reaction you usually expect when things like this happen.

Absolute waste. Ran the show for Bournemouth against my beloved Huddersfield a couple of years ago in the play-off final. He was so good we signed him! Hardly played, was offloaded back to Bournemouth and it seems like he's ****ed it all away.
Still young enough to make a career for himself and without doubt has the ability.

Bit of a mad year for him, released by Bournemouth, signed for Dundalk and was ok but didn't pull up any trees. Talk was he was quitting football and joining the army over the winter, signs for Salford City, then Ramsbottom Utd and now rocks up at Rochdale. All within 10 months!

Jaysus, that's some change in fortune for a fella who wasn't getting into Dundalks side here and, as stated, looked like retiring from football altogether.

It's like he's on the run from someone and not very good at it.

This article begins as a brief story of redemption and ends with a picture of one of the strangest tattoos I've seen in a while.

And is coming in for some praise amongst Rochdale fans: http://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/members/rochdale/forum/151661/donal-mcdermott/#11

If he's starting the season well it would suggest to me he's used the summer to work on his fitness which can't have been exemplary up until recently given the lifestyle habits he refers to and the fact he was playing in the doldrums at Ramsbottom United. Hopefully, he can power on and start to have the career that looked to have passed him by and, currently, looks to have passed Keith Treacy by.

EDIT: And here are highlights, including the goal. McDermott brings an excellent save out of the keeper and the next bit of action is his goal. He looks visibly tired after taking it: http://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/competitions/capital-one-cup/9946522/rochdale-1-1-coventry-aet-rochdale-win-5-3-on-pens

The redemption story continues.

His second goal of the season puts Rochdale in front away to Blackpool.

Made a brilliant start with Rochdale, went off the boil a bit but has come back to a bit of form last few games and scored on Saturday.

I read about this bloke. His parents were so poor, they couldn't afford the "D" that goes at the end of his first name! Very moving stuff.
