Jaysus - completely forgot about the Arctics. Really liked Humbug.
A brave and ambitious leap forward by them.
Will be interesting to see where they head to next.
Not heard new Ian Brown album yet - but appears to have been well received here and has been reviewed favourably.

Forgot about Invaders Must Die, a real return to form for the Prodigy. White Lies 'To Lose My Life' in there too, honourable mentions must go to Editors 'In This Light..' and Placebo 'Battle For The Sun'...

Has no-one else found this a really poor year for music?
The album that I've liked best was released in 2008 I think : Tallest Man on Earth's "Shallow Graves"
The Muse album leads a list of massive disappointments in my book.

Will add Biffy Clyro's 'Only Revolutions' to the list, very impressive. Them Crooked Vultures debut worth a mention too.

John Mayer - Battle Studies
Only album that I have that was released this year, and John Mayer is always reliable for brilliant music.. though he apparently spends up to 14 hours a day writing music so it's not as though it comes without hard work. Legend.
Two to add from Asian artists
The new she album called Orion is as good as the debut (I threw one of her tracks on my last Foot Exchange CD for those of you that got it, if you liked that, you'll like this)
and a female pianist I was put on to yesterday called Yuki Murata just released her debut album called Films, brilliant stuff from the first couple of listens, here's a taster

I'm a bit wary of hearing it. I like Weezer but their last two albums were very sub-par. Been marked as a 'mid life crisis' album and that doesnt bode well.

Late entry for me as I've only just started listening to it but Noah & The Whale's First Days Of Spring is a superb break up album, one of the best I've ever heard

That's an amazing album, probably my favourite of the year so far. I'll be going to buy a few more in the sales, so my opinion may change. Saw them at Cois Fharraige in Kilkee this year, and both their performance and the atmosphere was electric. They can do no wrong in my book.
Someone mentioned Ida Maria's Fortress Round My Heart, but I'm pretty sure I bought that last year. It might have been an import though, as the cover's slightly different. It's a decent album, but wouldn't be on my favourites list. The singles stand out a little too much for me.
My assorted favourites for 2009 would be:
Noah and the Whale - The First Days of Spring
Dark Was The Night (a double album to raise money for an AIDS charity, with some of the best North American indie acts at the moment - The National, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Conor Oberst, et al)
Delorentos - You Can Make Sound (a really rather excellent return)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! (my party album of the year)
The Maccabees - Wall of Arms (I liked the first album but this is 1000 times better. Amazing live band as well)
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Franz Ferdinand - Tonight (not the complete article, but when it works, it really works, some killer tunes on this one)
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Kasabian - West Ryder Lunatic Asylum (another one that is miles better than its predecessor)
The XX
Many things to look forward to in 2010, but primary among them would be Vampire Weekend's new album in January, plus the debut from Marina and the Diamonds, who totally obliterate Florence in my eyes. I think Laura Marling has something in the works as well. Oh, and Fionn Regan's second album is out in February, which judging by the single, should be pretty special.

A few late additions I've just listened to..
Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'It's Blitz' is a fantastic album and The Horrors 'Primary Colours' is worthy of a mention too. A joke band a few years ago, but superb album this time.

I bought the Doves, the Big Pink, the Low Anthem and an REM live album, which I need to give a listen to in the next few days. Doves sounds excellent, from what I've heard.

The Low Anthem album is excellent, one of my albums of the year, they're playing Tripod in March I think, should be an excellent gig

I picked this up yesterday on your recommendation, have listened to it a couple fo times and it is pretty special, very different from the first one (obviously!) but better, proof if it were needed that misery is more entertaining than joy!
