The last draw was on a Sunday too, I'm pretty sure.
Yeah I remember it was a Sunday too.
7th Feb.... The draw is on a Sunday? Is it not usually a Friday? Strange.... hopefully it is more than just SSN (I don't have it at home).
Your thinking of CL draws.
Although the WC draw was on a friday last year.
You can be sure the draw will be on Eurosport and maybe Setanta, no chance of it on rte, but maybe on their website.

We're due to get England. We've not been in their group since '92 qualifiers.
Trapattoni v. Capello. These draws often throws up games like that, just as we ended up with Italy in our group right after we appoint an Italian coaching team. I've a feeling we get England or France in our group, hopefully France.
Why's that?
When was the last time rte showed any qualifying campaign draw live??? I certainly cant remember and it def didnt happen for WC2010 or Euro 2008.
France would be one hell of a draw to get, dare I say it I think we would all want to beat France more than if we drew England. Problem is Monsieur Domenech is unlikely to be in charge post this WC.

That's unbelievable!! I had just become a bit fanatical about soccer in the months before that qualifying campaign, suppose the '90 WC really although I had little interest at the beginning of the tournament. I remember the general consensus was that we had blown it after that draw though, as we had already played England twice. After the 3-3 in Poland though there were some saying that we were better off having blown the lead, as Poland still had a slight chance of progress and therefore would try harder against England in the final match. We were by far the best team in the group, trashing Turkey twice while England scraped two fortunate 1-0's, with the Turks hitting the bar at Wembley. We also completely dominated at Wembley, I'll never forget the spell of pressure for the 10-15mins before Quinn's equaliser. Moran also had a goal disallowed against Poland in the 0-0, foul on the keeper I think, or so the ref said.
Same as. I was at my first Ireland match when we drew with England in Landsdowne. Wednesday afternoon, 3 o clock kick off. I still remember the goals being different to any other stadium; they had a wee white patch on each side in the netting. It was the only time I ever sat in the old stand.

Yeah I remember RTÉ used to show all the draws live at one stage but wasn't sure if they did in recent years. I honestly think that we would have a better chance of taking points off England than France, and more importantly challenging to top the group. I find it difficult to invisage topping a group with France in it, especially seeing as they'll probably be under new management. I don't think the whole 'revenge' thing will count for much by then to be honest.

I remember I was coming home from school so my dad was taping the match for me and I was waiting til it was over to watch it in full, without knowing the score. He switched over to RTÉ 1 before putting it on for me so that I wouldn't hear the boys talking about it. Damn Live@3 was on one and they were just getting a report from Lansdowne and I caught the 1-1 scoreline at the bottom of the screen, sickener. Could have been worse I suppose had it not been for Big Cas!!

Most of the international qualifying draws are on Sundays, though it does vary sometimes.
On a different issue, I really think they leave the Euro draw incredibly late, just 7 months before it begins. It should be held no later than December, and the fixtures arranged by now. As it is, it's probably going to be Easter at least before we know when we're playing whoever.

Funny too how they used to have matches at that time. We watched it at school. Our primary school teacher brought in a TV for us to see it.
This was the match at Wembly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaoINmqR1Vw&feature=related
Cant find the one at Landsdowne. If someone has it on video.....:o

Either way, get your flights to Stansted booked cheap when the away fixtures are announced.... always easy to get on from there.

There are much nicer cities I would like to get to that Amsterdam. Like most irish fans, I am praying for France. Not just for pay back, but simply because i think they are arguably the poorest of the top seeds. Plus everyone loves Paris

Cos you'd never be able to arrange a holiday in just a mere six or seven months.
Sometimes I think you sit down and actively wonder what you can moan over.

We're Irish. Moaning is part of our DNA.
When do you want the draw to be made? After the fraudulent World Cup? The week of the first game?
What's the wait for? Just get on with it. The WC qualifiers are done by Christmas, so that's when the draw should be.

As nicked from elsewhere
And only Germany's group finished in order of seeding.
Here are the seeding pots and where the teams actually finished in their groups:
Are the seeding pots in that post, now confirmed, or do we have to wait for an official announcement later in the week?
SuperDave

Confirmed a long time ago. In fact, pretty much as soon as the world cup playoffs were over, as they had a fairly clear seeding system in place that made it easy to work out. They make their minds up in time, uefa. Unlike fifa of course. They have however confirmed that the playoffs will be seeded and that the seeds will be at home in the second leg. The pots were listed somewhere earlier on in this thread.

No Norn Iron, no Scotland, and no Bulgaria from the last group.
Pot 3: Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina

IMO, pot two and four are the key pots from our perspective.

Group I love
Holland/Portugal
Czech Republic
Rep Of ireland
Wales
Liechtenstein
Andorra
Please No:
Spain
Serbia
Ireland
Slovenia
Montenegro
Azerbaijan
Not only woud I fancy us doing well in first group I also think they be pretty decent places to go on away trip i.e Amersterdam Prague and Cardiff who turn these places down.
Czech Republic are overrated team and have been for past 5 years. Dont want get Spain as there just too dam god good. Serbia I expect to get even stronger as national side. Slovenia would be a total disatser as fourth seed in fact I go as far say I be more afraid of them then I would some of the second seeds.
I don't know about Slovenia, but I'd agree that if we got Serbia as our second seed, it would make for a very tough group. I wouldn't be overly worried about any of the other second seeds. They're strong enough teams, but I'd fancy 3 or 4 points against most of them.

If Ireland avoid these teams, I would be really happy, not many great sides out there, we would have a decent of winning the group.
Pot 1: Spain, Germany
Pot 2: Serbia, Romania
Pot 4: Belgium
Pot 5: Montenegro
Pot 6: None

Two teams I'd want to avoid from a travel point of view are Wales and Cyprus, better places to see than returning to them 2 places. We've done so much of central Europe at this stage, a Baltic or Scandinavian away would be nice.
The pot we really need to be concerned about is POT 2, and slightly less POT 4 and POT 1. The other 2 pots should not have much influence on the group, and if we asay draw Montenegro from POT 5, it'll be tough for the rest of the teams in the group as well so shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't mind Romania as a second seed. They were awful in their last campaign coming in at second last behind both Lithuania and Austria. I know that traditionally they are pretty strong but they are obviously not too great at the moment.

They completely under achieved, they are a tough team to beat when they get their act together and will want to prove themselves, they really should have threaten France and Serbia and are good enough although if Mutu is suspended, that would be a massive loss for them.
Talking of Belgium, they have a real foundation for a great team in the future, it would not be good news to get them at all.

The point though is that while they should have done better, they didn't. They can only be judged on their form, which as I previously outlined, was very poor in their last campaign. When you consider who we could get out of pot two, there is no doubt that at this moment, Romania would have to be regarded as one of the easier draws.
I think you're right about Belgium though. Of the 4th seeds I wouldn't want them, Slovenia or Cyprus.

God love the optimists! I may be mistaken but I think we have only once ever topped our group and that was for Euro 88. Not sure we could top our group in a group like Italy/Portugal/Holland, England/Russia/Turkey and Slovakia/Bosniia . So, for example, if we draw Italy, England and Slovakia you'd still be reasonably optimistic that, not only would we qualify, but that we would top our group?

Silviu Lung. He was 37 or 28 at the time, I think.
Never realised Timofte played against St Pat's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Timofte) a couple of months after the penalty.
Manager of CF Bralia in the Romanian third division now.
