Noel Hunt out for Reading tonight, no indication of when he'll be back: http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10306~1837682,00.html

Noel Hunt is out for a few weeks with a knee problem

article from today's Herald about the lack of depth in striking options, also mentions that Ribery, Benzema and Henry are doubts for the French: http://www.herald.ie/sport/soccer/striking-options-narrow-for-trap-ahead-of-france-1924630.html

If Nunt, Folan and Best are all out then Trap seriously needs to be considering Clint for backup. Since it'd only leave Doyle, Keane and Long from the last squad and you realistically want 5 strikers.

Though knowing trap it'll be stokes and hmm...I don't know for the last spot, don't see him calling up Murphy either.

Duff is starting to hit some form so only a matter of time now before he gets injured again.

Well, even with all those injuries, we will have Keane, Doyle, Long, and Keogh, so Trap may not feel the need to add in Clint. I'd have him in myself though.

Normal folk would be noticing the doubts for the French team in that article.
It doesn't matter which striker sits on the bench for us, we only have 2 strikers who are capable of playing to the required standard and who can win the game for us.
Lets hope they are fit to play all the 2 x 90 minutes.

you'll probably have to change the sheets the following morning if you do, Worm.

Any opportunities for Irish lads to take out some more French before the play-offs e.g Anelka, Gallas etc. ?

yes your right I've never seen a player who has been out injured more times than Duff, he always seems to have something wrong with him.

Well, Kieth Andrews missed his chances on Anelka on Saturday.

Unfortunately Henry is back on the bench for Barcelona tonight

I doubt either Gallas or Anelka would be starting for them with a clean bill of health.

Henry back on the bench = We're screwed.

Henry didn't come off the bench, but this means he will more than likely be fit for the play offs

Anelka was excellent today against Bolton. So whoever plays upfront for France will be good. Lets hope we can get at their two central defenders and score a goal or two.

Why do you doubt that, when this is the team that started their last game

FRANCE: Mandanda – Sagna, Gallas, Abidal, Evra – Govou, L. Diarra, Toulalan, Henry (cap.) – Anelka, Gignac

Bummer for Arsenal. Valuable player for them.

And injure evra in training.

lads, even tho he may not have started, this is still a good thing. could be another injury or a suspension that would have brought him into contention.

also sows another seed of doubt in french minds.

ok, maybe i'm clutching at straws, but its hard not to get swept up in the excitable fervour created by this going green campaign....

... another 30 or so injuries and we have a chance of beating the froggies.

CRFC&SRFC

Evra will start regardless....I dont think the french are anything great at the back and we should really be a threat on setpieces. We need to have a fully fit team for both legs...

McGeady showing good form for Celts and hopefully Duff will recover...With those 2 fit and Keane and Doyle up front we have every chance....

If you look at back at the Italy games home and away and Bulgaria home and away, we could have taken full points but for individual errors...Time to be positive....We have arguably Europes best keeper too.

In Trap we trust

confirmed on soccerrepublic, in a note about Saha's performance at the weekend: http://soccerrepublic.eircom.net/News/The-State-of-La-Republique-3-nov.aspx

perhaps on the verge of a recall to the French squad but with the squad announced on Thursday, it may be too late.

The one guy I particular fear above others, particularly considering his past record to pull it out of the bag when needed is Henry. I know hes not 100% fit at the moment but looks as though he will make it.

Thing is the sum of the parts has not performed to its potential for France for the last few years. If France perform as a team to their potential, they will beat us. However, the same couldve been said of Italy, yet we came away with two credible results are were not overrun in any game, primarily due to the organisation of our team imo. I think its important we dont let the french get their confidence up against us or else they could run riot.

According to the reports in the french media, they are concerned about our strength from set pieces as this is an area the french are weak under. They are also concerned about the tactical superiority of Trap to Dome.

This is by and large the same french team that lost twice to Scotland in the last campaign.......we can win this playoff....believe!!

Yes! Clichy may be irrelevant looking at the last team as per my post below, however every little helps!

Could someone organise a friendly between France and Birmingham before the 14th please??!

Benzema looked tres dangereux last night in the CL and will be someone I fear coming on as a sub. He was hacked at one stage but not seriously, unfortunately!

On Evra - Im not sure McGeady has the beating of him - It will be really tough, he's a solid defender but also gets forward a lot which I think will push McGeady back - I suppose this further supports the notion that Lawrence may well start.

Also - I read the article on Gignac a player I knew nothing about. Comes across as a down to earth type of guy but a real handful on the pitch from the sounds of things. Is St Ledger up to the physical task?

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2009/1031/1224257769773.html

Is there a thread on the merits of the French Squad that Ive missed?

Be interesting to look at the match ups seeing as we know who the Irish team will be and can assume the French will be similar to my post above.

Given, Dunne, Keane, Doyle all through unscathed by the looks of it, thankfully, all important players for us.

Best, Andrews and Sledge ok too.

Now we just need JOSH, Duff, Kilbane, Whelan, Hunt, Lawrence and McGeady and our first choice XI will be available.

the first thing that came to mind when I seen him limping off yesterday was that it could mean a call up for Viera, which I dont think would be great news. Hes not the same player as he used to be but hes a leader and even having him in the dressing room would help France

Olympique Lyonnais destroyer Jeremy Toulalan may not feature for France against the Republic of Ireland at Croke Park on Saturday because of an adductor problem.

http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=goal-jeremytoulalanremainsadoubt&prov=goal&type=lgns

Meanwhile, Abou Diaby, who club manager Arsene Wenger has said will miss the next three weeks, has been declared fit to stay with the French squad by Raymond Domenech, doubtless attracting the ire of the international game hating Arsenal boss.
