Champions to face Hartlepool and Huddersfied

Shels manager Pat Fenlon
Manager Pat Fenlon was pleased with Shelbourne's first run-out of the pre-season in Bray on Sunday; particularly in the second half when playing into an almost gale force wind.

His side added three goals to a first half lead from the PFAI Player of the Year Jason Byrne.

Shels won 3-0 - very good result away from home against a Second Division side in their season!

Jason Byrne with two and Ollie Cahill (from Aertel p 229)

Fair play ... but you'd expect the, to be doing that anyway though. I'd say they'd give most clubs in the first a run for their money too.

'Twas only a reserve team they were playing against, apparently...

Shelbourne Take It 24/02/04

Pools’ Reserve side were easily beaten in the end by a confident and well-organised Shelbourne outfit.

The Irish Champions took the lead midway through the first half when prolific striker Jason Byrne got on the scoresheet.

A long ball forward was flicked on in to the box where Byrne took a touch and drilled it in to the bottom right-hand corner with his left foot.

There were plenty of substitutions made by both sides throughout in a game played in a great spirit - and the atmosphere wasn’t bad either given the small pocket of vocal fans that had made the trip from Ireland!

Shelbourne scored twice more after the break to make the game safe and always looked in control against a youthful Pools side.

Byrne got his second of the match when he arrived at the back post to nod home from six yards just after the restart.

Then Ollie Cahill finished Pools off with a third when he bundled in the rebound after the initial shot had struck the post.

It was a tough workout for Martin Scott’s young outfit but one that will have been of good experience.
