View Full Version : FAI Statement on Licenses

This is from the FAI site.

Division licences with two clubs receiving no licence at this stage of the process.

For confidentiality reasons, the FAI cannot reveal which clubs received the licenses though Chief Executive Officer Fran Rooney is confident that all the clubs can earn Premier Division licenses.

“We see this as a long-term process. We are one of the leading seven countries in Europe at implementing the Licenses and we have submitted an application for Government Grant Aid to help the clubs.

“The Government have indicated they are willing to help over a number of years.”

Rooney is looking at a 3-4 year time frame for implementation and estimated that it will cost between €10 million and €20 million to bring up the clubs up to Premier Division License standard, though, after phase one, he was keen to emphasise the progress that has been made.

“The club Licenses have very positive implications. This is the first time that we have examined what needs to be changed and we have covered significant ground. The League of Ireland needed work – I think everyone knew that – this is just the start.

“This isn’t a punishment process. The goal is to get all the clubs up to the standard.”

Ken Robinson, chairman of the Independent Club Licensing Committee, also stressed that the role of Licenses was not to kill off clubs, but to help them improve and he and his committee will continue working over the next few years.

“This isn’t a destination, this is a journey,” he said. “We had to change the mindset within the clubs and we were always conscious of that. I think that the people involved with all the clubs on the Licensing side were very professional.”

Rooney was quick to address the problems that this may have on the League and four clubs in Europe next season.

“UEFA have already indicated that for the first year, they will give an exemption,” he said, which is good news for Shelbourne, Bohemians, Longford Town and Cork City who are all involved in European competition next season.

On the issue of how the League will be structured next season, Rooney was keen to point out that the FAI are not looking for clubs to be kicked out.

“I have to discuss everything with the clubs. Some clubs may wish to appeal and they have five days to do so,” he said. “We need to work together with clubs and the eircom League to bring everyone up to a higher level.”

Any appeals must be submitted within five days and will be heard by an Independent Appeals Committee within seven days.

Five days to appeal for a hearing that will then be herd within seven isn't giving the clubs a lot of time to sort through this. The story seems to be (ATFC fan Parnell ranger on a similar thread) that once a club is seen to be making progress and has plans in place, they will be given temporary exemptions to compete in the league.

Presume that means no fixture list for another twelve days either?

all bets are off that my club will not be in this years league. Might as well start a slow hand clap now. Rovers will get one on appeal but our crowd  no wonder we lost 5 first team players in the last four days.

Athlone received one because we made improvements to Saint Mel's after the initial inspections. If it was only because of the new stadium coming online, Rovers would have been awarded one too.

you know that money Bohs, Shels, City and Longford were due. Would they have received their full cut of that if they'd already met the A standard licencing requirements ;) just wondering if there was a reason that the Anne's end hadn't been tar-macced

“This isn’t a destination, this is a journey,”

Corny but true.

I think the licence issue isn't such a huge deal for 2004 as not many other countries seem to have even started it. I've heard no mention of any of our neighbouring countries starting the process.

Could be a 22-team 1st division then next season!

What about licencing in other European leagues? Our facilities, finances etc. might be dire, but surely better than some Eastern European leagues plus Wales etc. Whats the situation with clubs in those countries?

Each country has to agree it's own level with uefa, who take into account poularity of football, wealth, population etc.

For example one of the requirements in 1500 covered seats, that would be much higher in most countries and probably will be lower when the winter leagues in Wales and the north start sorting themselves out ?

Shouldn't be getting that money anyway. Should be shared out equally among all clubs.

Best of luck to Limerick (and Shams, I suppose ;) ), hope ye's get it. I'd be pretty confident we can get the A license. Think Bohs are close to getting it as well, aye?

Been through this on another thread. the clubs in europe get the money this year, other clubs get it down the line. perfectly fair.

Yeah. Rovers will be grand once they get a ground sorted (a representative was on the news tonight stating that they've reached an agreement in principle with another club for next season which will see them through.

Limerick on the other hand are in serious bother, fingers and toes crossed for them....

Yes there are also UEFA Licensing projects in other countries,

because Ireland has a summer season they are further in the progress then other countries.........

I know Scandinavia always had high standard Licenses so it was normal practice - www.svenskfotboll.se says somethin about licensing (but it's in Swedish)

I know FC Jazz Pori in Finland are also in UEFA Licensing Panic...........

Countries like Holland have high standards - so it's normal practice there.

Russian I don't speak

Northern Ireland has just had it's first controls.................Limerick FC had inspections this week

Spain will get big liquidity problems

Small countries like Faroe Islands and Malta have a big dispensation
