View Full Version : LOI Club of the Noughties

Whether Tyrone or Kerry are the team of the Noughties appears to be exercising the GAA community.

Anybody care to say suggest who are the League of Ireland club of the Noughties. Can I caution against counting up the number of titles and that some consideration be given to clubs that operated on some sort of sound financial basis.

Would have to be Shels for encapsulating everything the decade entailed for Irish football (professionalism, progress in Europe, financial meltdown.)

It's hard to see beyond Monaghan United and UCD.

There were clubs operating on some sort of sound financial basis?

In that case my answer is no club.

Add in regular rows with the FAI, threats of legal action.

Not to mention rows with everyone else, biblical floods and a death.

It has to be Shels...

It has to be us and hopefully us winning promotion this season will complete a cycle that's never to be repeated. I'll take the professionalism and winning trophies part but the rest is consigned to history I hope.

We'll be the clubs of the tens.

I think you will find Bohs have had more success in the noughties and without the financial fiasco (yet, at least) that engulfed the end of the Shelbourne era. Nor did we have the fractious relationship with other clubs that Shels seemed to make a policy of.
To answer the question of "team of the noughties" there would need to be a bit of clarity around the criteria (but where would be the fun in that).

5 titles to your 3? You have 2 cups to our 1. How do you think I'll find you were more successful?

1. Relegation (in your case) must be factored in.
2. Noughties are not over yet and Bohs may just have a bit to tack on before season ends ;)
3. Nowhere near the level of controversy around our achievements that existed around Shels.

I'm sure Dundalk would beg to differ.

We were demoted by the FAI.

Actually where have Bohs and Dundalk as clubs had major issues ? I hardly think Sean Connors programme rant about Bohs or posters here count as a dispute between the clubs. Nutsey made some comments about the "style" of play we encountered against them but again hardly constitutes an issue between the clubs (as with Connor simply the view of one individual).

Shels no doubt for good and bad reasons.

They raised the bar.

See point 3 of my earlier post (please note -this is NOT an invitation to reopen THAT debate)
Would not deny Shels credit for raising the bar RE LOI football in the late 90's early 00's but have to balance against the cost on the club.

My god though, it must have been some rollercoaster for the supporters.

Has to be Shels, to paraphrase a nursery rhyme....

There was a little club, run by a little dub,
Right in the middle of Drumcondra,
When they were good, they were very very good
but when they were bad they went unda. [Thanks dcfcsteve]

Shels would also be the LOI club of the Naughties by the way.

I'd suggest swopping "they went unda' " for "they were horrid" in the above to aid its rhyming quality.... :)

Cut him some slack, he supports Fingal, the chap probably didn't know football existed off a TV screen before Sporting moved in nearby.

thats very kind of you! obviously Roddy Collins and his chums got word of this too when they expressed an interest to buy the club!

This is going to choke me to say it, but the exemplar of the 21st century to date could probably be UCD. They managed to have a good spell in the Premier, got to a League Cup Final, built a new home, had a couple of U21 caps and a B cap too, I think.

In the negative box, however, they did introduce Paul Doolin to the game and had difficulties with transfers to Shels, and had a stupid name change (UCD Dublin?). If anything though, that made them stronger, and they are have apparently managed to avoid a serious financial meltdown.

Two league cup finals (and three other semi-finals) and several U-21 caps (Robbie Doyle, Ronan Finn, Gary Dicker, Conor Sammon, Darren Quigley, Hugh Davey (for the North) and probably one or two others I've forgotten).

The transfer difficulties with Shels weren't our fault. Doolin, on the other hand, we hold our hands up on.

Sorry, I wasn't accusing UCD of it, just saying that this was one of the negatives of the timespan.

Doolin - not a court in the land would fail to convict ye:D

If I ever want to wind up the committee members, I ask them which one appointed Doolin. :)

Only in Ireland

I've a feeling if you came 25 points behind us you wouldn't care about that too much. Don't worry, there's a whole 90 seasons left this century for you to win your very own shiny trophy.

Actually Derry have won seven shiny trophies this century already. :p

The year Shels were caught cheating and then relegated you's finished level on points with Derry.

Adding up premier division points for the whole decade would be the fairest way of judging, surely? in which case, we win, since Shels don't have any prem. points for the past two seasons :D
