Apparantly ... most of the Anti-Virus providers add in code/viruses into their software so that you'll have to get an upgrade of the software to rid yourself of the new viruses.
It is just a ploy to get you to pay for an upgrade.
But then again ... i could be wrong and most companies wouldn't dream of trying to generate repeat business for themselves that way.

I wouldn't be astonished if it was true. Haven't had any problems with this software yet.
I'm saving all the viruses I get onto a disk, it's a new hobbie of mine. I've got quite a collection.:D

Opera internet browser is a god send - way faster at loading pages than internet explorer and you can block pop-ups!
The new Firebird browser from Mozilla looks decent too.

The WebCrawler toolbar is a nifty piece of software - I find it produces more and better results than google once you get used to it.
If your looking for free stuff that's a bit unusual try:

I particularly liked the idea of 'careware'

WinZip is as good as.
After that Winamp is handier than Windows Media, Kazaa Lite is great and Ad Aware ha done me a lot of favours.

Leaving out WinZip, my choice of superb freebies in no particular order:
1. AdAware - rooting out spyware.
2. AVG - anti-virus program.
3. SoulSeek - the best P2P network of the lot.
4. Mailwasher - amazing for bouncing unwanted emails before downloading to PC.
5. ZoneAlarm - very effective firewall.

How many people actually paid for WIn Zip? I did - years ago. At the time there were no CD's and zip drives were very rare so it was something that was needed to make spanning floppies much easier so I felt I should do the right thing. It cost next to nothing.
A good free statistics package is:

OK, its slanted a bit towards palaeontology and all the case studies are palaeontological but anyone needing to use it can adapt or 'evolve' the case studies.
