Who's the best Irish singer of all time? Bono, Phil Lynott, maybe even Gary Lightbody?

Fergus O'Farrell wouldnt be far off IMO.

in terms of range i would say Damien Rice even though im more a fan of Phil Lynott and his music. Bono has a terrible voice (though it has improved over the years). Good call on Mick Pyro by the way, very different voice for an Irish singer. Andrew Strong also has a great voice.

Female? Linda Martin.

In terms of pure singing ability range etc, I'd go for Sinead, a truely remarkable voice; Dolores O'Riordan had a very sweet voice before she learned to shreek at evry opportunity, I'm also a fan of Gemma Hayes voice, really nice, Lisa Hannigan is a good shout too.

As for the blokes, as pointed out elsewhere, Bono isn't a technically great singer but he does have a huge amount of Charisma, I always thought Tom Dunne had a good voice for a Rawk singer and when Glen Hansard sings instead of shouting he has a decent voice, in terms of range & technicality though I'd say Brian Kennedy is probably the best male singer.

She sounds like a cat being strangled by Ronan Keating.

Why Ronan Keating specifically? Does he modulate the sound / key in the same way that a Capo is used on the guitar?

I think maybe RK is trying to sing at the same time. She slurs alot in her singing like Keating used to.

Forgot to mention Gemma Hayes. She has an amazing voice. Gary Lightbody hasnt a great voice live.

Some have mentioned Roisin Murphy which I would disagree with. Then again I don't like Sinéad O'Connor either.....

Don't subscribe to the idea that there's a best ******* ever. But for fun sake -Ladies first ...
Sinead O'Connor has a huge range but over eggs it sometimes.
Carol Keogh who used be in the Plague Monkeys, Tycho Brahe and currently appearing on Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Clubs single has a fabulous range as well and a unique voice full of character.
Paula Flynn whom most of you will know from her version of Let's Dance has a lovely warming voice.
Cathy Davey also. There's a lovely little rasp right at the end of some her phrasings and inflections that are just quality.

The chaps...

Paul Linehan (The Frank & Walters) ...a little surprised he's not come up yet. His voice is quite unique, he has an enormous range and projection to go with it. He rarely enough bends or slides off notes either (a common and sometimes annoying tendency in rocknroll probably handed down from swing and jazz singers) which gives him a bit of a choirboy quality that the bowl haircut of the early 90's only served to remind. :D

Cathal Coughlan (Fatima Mansions/Microdisney) Another powerful voice with great projection.

Fergal Sharkey that warble aint everyones cup of tea and some of his solo stuff was pants but who before him does he sound like? Edith Piaff at a stretch. Great unique voice with strength and character.

just because what type of group they're in dosnt mean there not good singers

I'm only winding you up CF. There's a bit of skewed grammar in there and if you repeat the quote in a knees up mother brown accent it could've been uttered by a stall owner in walford.

Agree with those two. Cathal Coughlan especially has a fantastic voice. "Town to Town" is one of the best Irish singles ever. Stephen Ryan of the Stars of Heaven also has a great voice.
