Our very own RMK has been included in the first five names in the top 100 living footballers chosen by Pele to mark Fifa's centenary.

Great to see that Pele has some knowledge of football. It happens to often that Roy Keane is omitted from polls for the best players in the world, and awards like world/european player of the year.

We all know how good he is,it's a pity the rest of the footballing world dosen't seem to notice.I think Roy wasn't even in the top 50 shortlist for European player of the year while the likes of sylvian Wiltord get in there.

Why shouldn't she be on the list Conor?

She's her country's all time leading goalscorer, has lead her country to three world cups, winning one. She's garnered more attention for the sport in her home country than Pele himself did when he joined the New York Cosmos.

It's all well and good to decry the women's game because over here it's given no attention (a fate EL fans should be able to sympathise with), but in the states, the women's game it's hugely popular (the WC's held there have achieved attendances that rivalled the mens WC in 1994). To consistently star in the national side for as long as she has with the base of female players the States has to pick from is impressive.

It might be a PR effort to include her in the 'preview 5', but in World football terms, she's done a lot for the sport and deserves her place.

Pele, being argubley the most inept football pundit ever to grace the planet, will probably generate a fairly crap list anyway.

As you prove with the post Conor, you can apply that argument to anybody on the list. Since everybody on the list can only be assessed based on the games they've played in and opponents they've faced, her lack of male opponents isn't enough to discount her from the list.

Agree that in the end these lists are meaningless though.

The most inept football pundit ever? What about our Frank or Liamo or Jim Beglin? This is one list where we could make a clean sweep....

A thread about an Irish player being listed as one of the top 100 living footballers is "off topic"!??

Its because the French football mag who first came up with the competition still make the list.

Hence you had Sonny Anderson and Pauleta on the list because they were decent in France.

Anyway any list that doesnt include George O'Callaghan cant be taken seriously:D

Brazil legend Pele has upset his fellow countrymen with his choice of the 120 best living players in the world for FIFA.

Only 12 Brazilians are on the list and the surprise omissions have infuriated the country’s media.

“According to Pele, Italy and France have more stars than Brazil,” said the Folha do Sao Paulo newspaper.

“In the list of the best 120 living players made by FIFA and Pele, the five-time World champions have only 12 names.”

“Pele’s list forgets Brazilian stars,” exclaimed sports newspaper Lance!. “It surprises us that names like Rivelino, Gerson or Tostao are out of it, while Senegal’s Diouf is there together with Korea’s Hong and Ghana’s Abedi Pele.”

The newspaper is also furious that many names from the glorious Brazil World Cup-winning team of 1970 are not included, while eight members of the France team which won the 1998 World Cup are in.

Among the Brazilians on the list are 2002 World Cup-winners Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, who had an argument with Pele after the tournament.

The players were upset with Pele’s criticism during the tournament and accused him of being opportunistic because he was part of the awards ceremony that crowned them.

:ball: :ball: :ball:

for the record we only had Keano, the north only had Best, the list is available here FIFA 100 (http://images.fifa.com/fifa/media/2004/FIFA_100.pdf)

He made it.

The list is bollóx. Giles and Brady are deserving of a place on it.

Too many modern day players. Veron:rolleyes: Trezeguet:rolleyes: Kluivert:rolleyes: .

All great players but not as good as some who've been left out.

No John Robinson:rolleyes:. Surely he was alive when the list was made.

The same Pélé who picked Nicky Butt as the best player of the last world cup and predicted Columbia would win the world cup in the US.

That is, quite possibley, the most I've ever laughed while reading a football messageboard. Someone who is regarded as an absolute joke is listed amoungst the 100 greatest footballers to ever grace our planet.

I've always thought Pele was an absolute joke when it came to being a pundit, but I never could have predicted that :D

That is an absolute joke. The list is quite clearly, by that inclusion, an absolute farce. Sounds like Pele was trying to stay politically correct rather than pick the best 125 players. Diouf is a diving, moaning player with a very bad attitude.

How can Pele embarrass/degrade himself by creating such a list?

As already stated - total joke - clearly a political move and one per country as much as possible.
