Congrats to Olive Loughnane who came second in the 20k walk in the World Championships in Berlin today.
My girlfriend worked with her and she is sound out. Came 7th in the Olympics last year. Was in the shadow of Gillian O'Sullivan (our last medalist) for years. From Loghrea but living in Coachford in Co. Cork

Whereas men kicking a ball around a field is perfectly sensible!
If the IAAF want to give a medal for the event i think we should celebrate an Irish athlete winning it.

no its a silly sport, nationality hasn't got anything to do with it with - its pretty embarrassing for anybody with a mind to even think of trying this
anyway - go ahead, i wont stop u walking around town like this..................;).

Well I won't stop you walking around town in football shorts and boots.;)
You're probably only winding me up but I'll take the bait.
Your attitude sounds like begrudgery against an excellent Irish international sporting achievement. I consider golf to be a silly sport but I applaud Harrington winning majors all the same.

its not, just cause someone is Irish doesnt mean i have to clap, i dont jump on any bandwagon..................i love sport but hate this thing........Olympic walking................

also there is the old Billy Connolly gag about this as well:)
golf is a test, silly walking is a test too but its rubbish to watch and only failed runners do it
really...................excellent achievement..............dont think so............imagine trying to explain to someone that you are an Olympic walker and this is what you have done for most of your life!!!!!!!!!

Imagine telling someone you're the second best person at something in the world but some weirdo on the internet thinks your sport is rubbish
Whether you like the sport or not, to say someone winning a silver medal in the Track & Field world championship isn't a great achievement is begrudging of the highest order.
But continue to base your psorting knowledge on Billy Connolly

I'm entitled to my opinion, and its a silly sport, but if you want to jump up and down and rave about it fair enough -
Its not a great achievement since its a silly sport...........is it even a sport in itself
So maybe RTE and sky sports should show wall to wall speed walking from now on then
by the way oh holy one - have you ever actually ran in Santry or ran in all ireland athletics meet.................I have!!! But yeah you are correct as always:rolleyes:
I only correct you if you're wrong, and you're an idiot if you think it isn't a sport. You think only sports o Sky are real sports?
And for the record, yes I have ran in santry (at schools level).
walking is no sillier than hammer throwing, or triple jump.

You might even say it's less silly given nearly everyone walks everyday. :)
All joking aside, I've personally spent some few minutes of my life thinking about how I could walk faster without looking retarded or as if I was coked up. Slightly longer strides driven from the knees was the conclusion I came to at the time. Seeing as this isn't a models' forum I'm hesitant to ask if people have any special walking techniques. But I welcome any tips.

No you are an idiot if you think this is a serious sport, seriously:rolleyes:
The average man in the street, or at least the pub i was in yesterday, all having a good laugh at the walkers!!!!
Of course you are different, you know everything about all sports, dont you...................cause they say its a sport dont mean it is a sport..............whats next ........tidily winks in the olympics?
Why dont you go walking around dublin then...........see how far your serious sport will get you;)

So far you've tried to say that Billy Connolly, Sky Sports and now the average man in the pub gets to decide whats a sport.
And you're on every other thread calling the man in the pub every name under the sun because he's watching football on the Telly...
You're missing the poitn completely benno. I don't get to decide the sports, thats the whole point. If someone talks it seriously, who am I (or you) to say its not a serious sport?

Gillick makes the final! Fourth in his semi-final, but a very solid time of 44.88 gets him into the final as the second fastest loser. (the final is on this Friday at 20.20)

We may just need to cross the laces of a few of them for that to happen! Hopefully though yeah, nice to get a World Outdoor medal to add to European and Indoor. No matter what, that was a fantastic run in the semi, and a great achievement to make the final.
Final is at 20.15.

Fourth in the end with a new Irish record, a bit off the bronze but a great performance nonetheless.

Dead proud of her. 4th best in the world is fantastic.
On the walking debate, I used to participate in it when I was younger and took it equally as seriously as I took my hurdling and high jump events. Made Ulster finals in walking but didnt progress to mosney and then gave up on it to concentrate on a "real sport" - Gymnastics! :D

Derval was the only european in the final.
She, Gillick and Hession and Olive have good chances of medals in next years European championships in Barcelona

My girlfriend worked with Olive inthe Central statistics office. She is a qualfied statistician but has been on a career break for a few years to concentrate on Athletics full time.(Bloody civil servants bleeding the country dry again;)
