Losing 4-1 to a team with 1 point from a possible 48?

And that's on the back of two other very poor results. What's happened since their decent start to the season? Can they be caught by Kildare:eek:?

In all fairness to Kildare County they have improved massively since Joey Sommerville has taken charge and the team is very different to the one that started the season. Can see Kildare County picking up more wins before the season is out.

Yeah, they've been competitive for a few games. Mervue's form seems to have fallen off badly, but Kildare are no pushovers any more.

From the highlights there was no other team that was going to win once Kildare's first goal went in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcSHhe6V3FE

Mervue are starting to realise that they are not good enough to compete in the LOI. The crowds average less than 100, and I can see Kildare catching them

Thats harsh....ok the crowds aren't great but they were never going to be for a team just up from Junior football, and who dont play at their own ground. I saw them beat Limerick, and they are not the worst team in the league. It takes time to develop a team and a club at a senior level. Ya the loss to Kildare was bad, but thats football whose to say they wont win their next one....:ball:

Crowd for the first game was over 800, and they still play in Galway it's not like it's miles away from there old ground

Kildare's own crowds aren't much bigger. Ditto for Monaghan. For a team in their first year up they've done ok. A fairly large element of GUFC supporters (not you specifically) appear terrified of Mervue establishing themselves. Which is understandable I suppose. :)

Edit: Having consulted the attendance thread Mervue's average crowd (which is a little misleading I'll admit) for the season is higher than Kildare's, almost identical to Monaghan's and within a hundred of both UCD and Longford. So hardly miles of the pace.

Crowd for the first game was over 800,

Yep with a third of them I would say from Athlone

A third just for the novelty

It will be tough for them but they should stick at it seeing as they only pay expenses

i'd imagine that when Mervue do move back to Fahy's field they would get crowds of about 300 -500.

they have done ok since moving up and it must be said the step up from junior football is massive. they will only get stronger if they can keep at it - look at the improvement in wexford youths over the past couple of years.

Agree that the move back home should bring the numbers up somewhat (was supposed to happen this month wasn't it?). GUFC had excellent gates for the 2/3rds of a season they were based there albeit a long time ago.

Don't really see the comparison with Mick Wallace's boys

new to the league & operate on an amateur basis.

seem to remember wexford at or near the bottom in their first season too.

IMO Mervue's best chance of survival is if GUFC fold, which is an ever increasing likelihood, however hurtful I find it.

In the First Division GUFC core support was 350-500 rising to 1k+ for top-of-the-table fixtures or cup ties against higher placed opponents.

I'd say it will be the same for Mervue if they decide to stay with it (and from what I can gather that's far from a foregone conclusion).

Unlike Sligo or Dundalk soccer in Galway has competition from Rugby and Gaelic Games virtually all through the season. Apart from the general effects of the recession, attendances will only support running costs if the club is competing at the top end of the Premier league and winning consistently at home.

Can I ask when Mervue are moving back to Fahys field?

The site notice says any objections have to be in before the end of july, so nothing will even be starting until then. My guess is that they wont be into there own grounds before the end of next season !!!!

About 200-300 from Athlone and the home crowd were very quiet and seemed dis-interested. Hope it works out for them though. would love to see them robb a few gufc fans and take over as the big club in Galway. :D :D

Is it true that Mervue are in trouble money wise and might not be in the league next year? There was an interview with the kildare manager on kfm on friday night and the interviewer said that it was reported that Mervue was in difficulty and Kildare could be saved from relegation.
